Babylonians, There Bowman isnt useless, You can use it as a spearman or, archer. This versatility really helps, its like having a unit like the legionary... In 20 turns, after start! Maybe quicker, Then you have the Scientific trait, Which helps you keep up with the mind-boggling ai. Also this assures no one will be more powerful, to much sooner, it also helps you get Bowman earlier,

Allowing you to rush other civs and stake out your Territory. Get a few workers who don’t cost the upkeep to improve your territory and still keep up with the rest (putting your science down wont matter as much) Then you can build your temple's fast switch to the next government and upgrade your Bowman to Longbowman. Then Start your conquesting again. Killer's Right :p .

Bowmen are excellent. I just don't like the early UU, but I can see why they are popular. They are great on the attack and great on the defence, and available early. They don't require iron or horses.

Babylon is really an excellent civ, but I like the militaristic trait more. Cheap libraries are not needed if you can pound techs out of the AI :D

The Scientific trait is very useful as you need it to stay close to the AI's incredible numbers of techs. They always seem to have more than me! Suppose the babylonians aint so bad. Ive not played as them yet but fought against them loads so im probably biased against them.

just tried zulu on deity and had such a crap start even though i did same as with other civs!? i think ill leave them alone!

Well said Higher game. Who did you vote for? Japan? I find civs with a scientific trait are better. I still don’t see anything good about Egypt. Besides the nostalgic image they give out.

Eygpt is one of the most powerful civs! I just don't like them because I like the militaristic promotions of militaristic civs. Eygpt's usefulness depends on how you play Civ 3.

Do you restart until you are on a river in grassland or take any starting position- even jungle? Eygpt is good for the hardcore player starting out in nasty starting positions. The workers can clear the jungle quickly. Otherwise, the faster workers really aren't needed. They are religious, so they get cheap temples and cathedrals. And 1 turn anarchy.

The Eygptian UU isn't very good because horsemen replace it soon, and you don't want an early GA. It isn't a problem against the AI because they still use swordsmen in the modern age, but it would be more of an issue in MP. Just make religious and militaristic wonders and hope you get a good GA.

I like Japan because they are religious (best trait) and militaristic, and their UU comes at the perfect time. The samurai is 4/4/2 and doesn't require horses. I just trade off the horses because I don't need them for a while. The extra defence gives the samurai an edge in both attack and defence. They are very cost effective.

Scientific civs are good, but religious civs can keep the people happy. That is more important because you get a lot of your techs from the AI anyway. I will take cheap temples over libraries any time. The free tech per age is good for scientific, though. But the 1 turn anarchy benefit is why I ultimately choose religious.

Yes, But What about the Aztecs? They have a good uu... for early on, of 'Course, everything about them is for the early ages, The Early Golden Age, The Religious trait helps the most early on, and militaristic, gives you a good start with veteran units. but after everyone has staked out there land, These Traits (except religious) don't matter as much, And your uu will fall to horseman. This is when scientific, comes in, and has a lasting impact. I go with either the Greeks or the Bab's.

The Aztec GA is too early. I would use the Iroquios instead. I can live with them not being militaristic.

Nothing is to early, in fact I prefer an early advantage, You can take your whole continent, or half, at least, with the feared jaguar warrior ;) What do you think the best uu is? I'de have to say the Hoplite... Not only do you not have to pay the upgrade for spearmen-pikeman. But there are cheaper than the pikeman. originally posted by thomson_2001

First off, Your playing on deity, Why the hell did you expect to get a good starting spot? ;) But I do think your right, Whenever im the Aztecs Im always close to the jungle... Indeed im almost always Surrounded by jungle? And when the Egyptians, Im always not far from some desert. But perhaps that’s the part of the culture groups? Egypt=Middle eastern Aztec=American So conceivably playing as the Romans should get me next to the a nice bay, with wines abound... Conceivably...

my favourite is japan
militristic easy elites
religiuos loads of temples and cathedrals to increase happiness when at war

samuria probably 1 off the longest running elite units lasts up to riflemen plus make a really cool sound when fortified

I tried it out (all on deity). Using Aztec i started next to 3 jungle tiles!Using English i started next to some grassland, plains and forrest. With Russians i started next to grassland and tundra.Using egyptian there was 4 desert tiles! In all cases i was on a river. I repeated these civs with similar results. So there must be some kinda link there!

Ive just finished watchin the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and am considering disbanding all my millitary units in my latest game (especially my transporters and marines).....got a guilty concience now :( lol

my above theory is only correct some of the time but i find it happens about 80% of the time.

My two favorites are the Romans and the Babalonians. The Romans because they are militaristic and because the Legions are so powerful for so long.
The Babs because they are religious and I can switch governments easily, plus the Bowmen don't require resources and come after only one tech. They can give you a quick advantage over the other civs.

Im playing with the Indians and I found cool the War Elephant , they dont require iron or horses, and as in my game I had not iron I managed to destroy the Chinesse.
But my favourite once are the Persians and the Egiptians.

The indian war elephant is scary to defend against. Its just so bloody big! I dont like the way Ghandi always moans at me though.I think he has serious "time of the month"!

I like the Babs because you can win on Emperor by being a builder, if you have a good starting position: river, coast, 20+ shield prod. at size 12. I like winning with 8 cities or less.

Stands up and sings Soviet National Anthem

Souz ne rusimiy
Respublic Svobodni
Splotila Naveki
Velikaya Rus!
Da zdravstvuet Sozdanniy
Druzboy Narodov
Velikiy, Moguchiy Sovetskiy Souz!

The Russians are the best, they are scientific, and have a grate UU-Cossacks.

I use cavalry to fight infantry weakened by artillery. The cossack doesn't go obsolete until tanks arrive. Plus, they can be upgraded from knights. It's just a shame the Russians have such bad traits.
