Romans have a good UU but that is about it, at least until commercial civs are made stronger. The immortal is preferred against the stupid AIs, but the legion would be better in multiplayer. They are a good civ for beginners, but I would prefer a civ with the religious trait.

Cross between the Persians and the Russians.

Persians have a UU like no other civ. The Russians, just in case I start on a big big continent with lots of goody huts.

Although I'm starting to turn more Persian instead of Russian.

EDIT: Once I'm give the choice to be the Vikings I'll drop all this Persian/Russian sh*t.

:viking:

America (since adding 'minuteman with added defense) and Rome. I just love the classical design.

I like the Germans.

Their Panzers are the best UU in the game, with Samurai coming in as a close second, their trait combo makes for a big strong advanced army that you can bully and maim the other civs with :)

I'm really surprised religious fares so badly. Is this because we all t4end to use the anarchy thing to our advantages? I love going to pointless wars in modern times, jsut to make all AI change gov, then back to peace, jsut so they have long anarchy while I switch back and forth wioth ease!
 I hear you Killer, I was the English once and was losing money by -37 per turn, I was studying the printing press and had education.

I was at war with the hated french ;) And was at the point where they had to disband some workers, I simply switched to Anarchy and made +0 took some cities while at war, sold some of them to Russia, got enough money selling 4 cities that I bought the printing press. and when I came out of Anarchy and into The republic I had lost enough units to make -3, finished some markets and before I knew it I was back in anarchy selling cities for democracy!
Also, why not Babylon???? the UU sucks, but religious and scientific gives you a very big chance to grab alll Middle Ages wonders. And culture flips go TO me if I use them, never away....
Yes I agree, And in my games Culture flipping still plays an important part. However their uu is GOOD not bad.

I voted for Egyptians (high culture, high production), but the Babylonians come in close second (high science, high culture).

The thing I really like about industrious is the fast workers... That rocks !
And religious is a must, for my kind of play.

after playing with industrial civs its hard to play with others cos the game feels so slow! roads, mines and irrigation are built soo much quicker!

Lots of people seem to think that the Egyptians have a bad unique unit in the war chariot; but I think it's a fairly good unique unit. It only costs as much as an archer, but has an extra movement point. Also, it means that you can essentially skip horseback riding altogether. That means you can get 3 "horsemen" for the price of 2 - and earlier too. The only disadvantage is that they are wheeled, but this is only a minor disadvantage. If you look rushing people, go straight for The Wheel. Who can withstand a rush of 5 war chariots that early in the game? It depends on a source of horses, of course, but with Industrious workers, you can be sure to hook up any source of horses nice and quickly. At just 20 shields, even a low production city can afford to churn them out.

Also, war chariots have a long life. They last until the advent of knights, and then they can simply be upgraded to knights! Lots of cheap war chariots sitting around to be upgraded to knights in one fell swoop.

As for the other Egyptian traits, they are probably the best in the game, at all levels - everyone knows that religious is a great trait at every level, and industrious helps you right from the word go. It's like starting with an extra worker, which would be a major bonus to begin with, but unlike being expansionist, the advantage lasts all through the game, right up to when you want to build railroads throughout your Civilization.

Just a question for everyone: what do you think is more important, having a good unique unit, or having good Civilization traits? I suppose it depends if you are warlike or not. I used to be biased towards a good unique unit, but now I am preferring good civilization traits.

Higher Game: Legion good at multiplayer. You are right. With PTW Legions will become much more usefull

Calox: Germans?!? Are you kidding?
Panzer good? for what, 20 turns till modern armor makes them obsolete and useless?

PCHighway, Babylonian UU is bad and has a bad upgrade. Use BAbylonians for peace only

Hey, Romans are back to the top :)

Yeah, the Panzer was really overestimated when Civ 3 came out. Back then, I remember everyone telling me France was the best civ.

I chose Japan because I think they are cool, and I didn't realize that they are so powerful! I don't like Eygpt because they don't have the key militaristic trait; it doubles the chance of promotions. Leaders are the trump card of many games, you know.

Don't sell the Babylonian UU short, however. In multiplayer, they will be very powerful early in the game, especially for small or tiny maps. They aren't much weaker than swordsmen, they don't require iron, and they are cheaper. Babylon is a very powerful civ with a good UU, but the GA is too early for my style of playing.

I like the indians there war elephants require no resources and have a good attack but counter attacks do hurt also being commercial and religious mean that building religious objects is a doddle with the increased revenue

Also the english i quite like only because i changed there UU to the longbowman and now they well and truly kick butt

Higher Game: Being Militaristic is reasonably important if you plan to go for early war. That is only one playing style, and is somewhat of a gambit. There are many playing styles that don't involve going to early war. Also, the religious and industrious traits are so good, that they often outweigh militaristic, even for an aggressive Civilization.

Militaristic's description should be "may get free wonders during game." Having twice as many elite units is a huge advantage. Try playing as China and pulling off the archer rush. I tried this popular strategy and won easily. The fact that they have the best UU in the game makes China an extremely powerful civ. If you love war, you can stay in monarchy for the whole game and can beat techs out of your enemy.

Try Telling the Zulu that Bowman are bad ;) The first Deity game I won was a Conquest, with the Babylonians. I defeated 4 of the eight civs Before They entered Medieval. So I have nostalgic reason's for defending them.

Give the man a Cigar! All his reasons are correct however, Do not say that They are only good at Mp, Like I said, they are strong enough to take a city, hold it, then when invention comes BAM you got 500 Longbowmen running around taking out spearmen, (the scientific trait should keep you ahead of other civs) Also If you keep a Great Leader, and hurry Leonardo's workshop, which conveniently comes with invention, just like Longbowmen.

Then you'll have plenty of money to hurry some Pikemen or if you haven't got Iorn, then just dont upgrade some Babylonian Bowmen. To protect your Longbowmen. This is how I defeated 4 civ's before they got to Medieval. True, They are not overwhelmingly good themselves, However, I consider The Bowmen's rein to last from Warrior code to Gunpowder (when you get the Musketman) That is quite a long time.

And if you play your cards right, You should be faaaaar ahead of other civ’s in tech, either by letting the first you civ you attack live, if he gives you some tech's (and an alliance vrs. the next target) Also The other civ’s shouldn’t be to much bigger than you. Early on.

Btw, I would also like to add that the deity game I played was standard size, but Pangea. Also the early golden age helped me keep up with the unforgiving Deaity AI. Also I DID use knights but they cost 7 shields while Longbowmen only cost 4!

i hardly ever use longbow men as knights are too powerful to overlook. Only build longbowmen if im in a hurry for troops.

Japan 0VV/\/$!

They have the best uu, two great traits, personally, I think the mil aspect is great for defence, and they belong to the coolest looking culture group, you just can't beat that.

BTW: I am Tokugawa's favorite concubine... yea, he has a thing for computer geeks, go figure.:crazyeye:
