The answer is proper planning and overwhelming force.

Throughout history, when superior forces lose to technologically inferior forces, the cause can be traced to
POOR STRATEGY (fighting the wrong war, such as in Vietnam),
POOR PLANNING (not taking the inferior forces seriously, such as the defeat of the Custer at Little Big Horn),
POOR LOGISTICS (sending troops to fight in Russia without winter uniforms, such as the German's did in WW2 because they promised a short battle against the inferior Russian forces),
POOR COMMUNICATIONS (such as the Charge of the Light Brigade),

or PLAIN BAD LUCK.

Killer Phalanx's? No way. If you send just a single tank or two to attack a well-prepared, fortified defender, and your men our consequently slaughtered, you should be courtmartialed.

Gunpowder infantry, when properly fortified, are almost impossible to dislodge. The most famous case of tanks being successfully used to destory an infantry army was German v. France in 1940. They didn't actually attack the infantry though, but bypassed them, hence cutting them off from their supply lines.

War, like life, is not fair. Some men live, some die. When invading, you had better be prepared for losses.

it has nothing to do with having large numbers.Of course you attack with large numbers.
That doesn't change the goofy combat results.It doesn't stop anyone from taking a city.This ai is very weak militarily.From what I have seen.It can swarm but thats no brilliant strategy.
I have lost modern armor to a pikeman.I have lost aircraft carriers to galleys.
It has nothing to do with realism either.
Its just silly.
imo-they have taken a step backwards in this area.I really don't understand it...I see no reason for it.

I think we are thinking in terms of relative strength. A tank far outclasses a warrior in strength, and axes do dent armor.
However, If the numbers come up, and they do get a hit--you lose one of your three hit points. Lose three and your are a goner. A swordsman or mounted rider have a denent chance of hitting-- not good, but decent. Now, if you get your tank to elite, your five points give you a real edge.

Not trying to be picky but although Rome did mainly fail due to over extended logistics etc., Genghis Khan conquered most of Asia with a combination of tactics and making examples of any city that resisted him, the September 11 attack had been planned for over two years and Hannibal had been prepared to fight the Romans ever since he was born. In fact the only thing that is surprising about his campaign is that he lost despite having better troops and never being beaten in Italy.
