I'm looking for other games similar to this, and would like to know under what genre this would fall.

Yes, it's turn based. Yes, it's strategy. Yes, it's historical.

But it really is one of a kind. I can think of other turn-based games. And other strategy games. But CIV is really in a class by itself.

It's historical in an extremely loose interpretation of the word.

First and foremost, Civ IV is a turn-based strategy game, although I don't know how to describe it in more specific terms that would lead you to similar games.

What about the Total War series? That's a historically themed strategy franchise right?

Sid Meiers Pirates! is a great game too, not as good as Civ4 but a great game still. If you want to try something new, I suggest you give it a try.

I'm going to agree with the Total War reccomendation. Rome: Total War is a great game. It doesn't have the replayability of Civ4, and it is a bit buggy, but all and all, it's one of the best and most entertaining games I have every played. Total strategy game crack, you will be very happy with it if you try it.

The Total War series is epic garbage. The strategy mode is useless. The AI is horrific.

But it's SHINY. And has REAL TIME BATTLES. With dumb AI.

Buy to play online multiplayer battles. Not for the game.

Try Space Empires IV. You can get it cheap and it's a very good game IMO. Don't bother wit SE V. It had good potential but is too buggy.

Is the Ultimate Edition worth the extra?

There's not a huge number of games in this genre and a good chunk of them are umm...predecessors of Civ4 :D so there's not much point there. But do check out Master of Orion 2 if you haven't already. The gist is rather similar, but all the details are different enough to not feel too old. And the ship design aspect of that game is still pretty much best in the business even today.

Playing quite differently (a lot more fighting and less building, especially choice of buildings) is the Heroes of Might & Magic series. It's not in its full glory until III, but cutting your teeth on I or II for a simpler way in is nice - so go for 1 of the compilations.

Get medieval 2 total war if your interested in the total war series. it has many improvements and much higher replayability. you will enjoy. other good games are age of empires but thats not turn based. its rts if you dont mind...although i prefer civ because age of empires in my opinion doesnt have much strategy involved. others will prolly disagree...

Civ IV is among the best of TBS - turn based strategy. Although it is a great game, there are actually some others that are good too.

I give top votes to the heroes of might and magic series (especially II, III and V) and also warlords II and III by the strategic studies group (these were great games and painfully underrated).

Unfortunately I don't play the genre much other than civ IV now, so I don't know any more current ones that are good. Although I do play a lot of civ IV, my typical game genres are RTS, shooters, sports, and epic popularity games like smash brothers and mario kart.

@ Zubbus
i haven't played galactic civ on any other installment other than the ultimate edition so i can't say for certain which are extras. all i know is that you get the full trilogy and the game prompts you with a neat interface before you play. I think any price for the game is almost like a steal when you consider the fact that it is after all one of the most immersive, infinitiely replayable and exquisitely wrought 4x series out there. I don't have a copy myself yet but going through all that trouble of playing it at school on a computer of a friend who does is clear testament to the game's worth.

@Team

Agree on the vote for heroes of might and magic series.

Yeah trilogy. But a search on gamefaqs shows 4 products besides the 2 editions. So is 1 left out or something? :D

I have been dying to ask someone who know the Heroes series how to get in the Warlords series. I have long wanted to try out the "heroes keep their progress between games" element. I have Warlords 1 (too old), Warlords 4 (misplaced somewhere at the moment) and Warlords Battlecry 2. But I have a sneaky feeling Warlords 2 or 3 might be the correct answer. So what do you say, which one (or ones) is the best fun and not too old for someone who has played HoMM3 to death?
