I use web-based services and the Pine program to access my university account...

I used Pine earlier - amusing when you have no mouse to help you.

I don't use email enough to warrant using something other than the webmail interface provided with our hosting. I used Thunderbird for about 2 weeks, but I move around a lot, and I can't figure out how to get Thunderbird to not delete the messages server-side after downloading, and I need to get to my emails from various locations, so I stopped using it.

In the left column, right-click on the name of your account, and then click on Properties. In the window that comes up, click on Server settings. Check the box labelled "Leave Messages on Server."

edit- Also, when you first set up your account, it will give you an option whether to download the messages at that time. Do not download the messages when you first set up the account - Go into Server Settings and check the box before you download your email.

What is the point of a mail client?

Outlook give many more options for email than just the standard web-interface. I haven't used any others, other than Outlook Express, but the mail client can be more useful than the web interface....

I'm also sure that personal preferece plays a large part as well.

You can keep your email on your own computer (in a much simpler way than running your own mail server).

I know it may not seem like a big deal, but at least in my case, I've been stung too many times by the fools that manage the mail server at my school who manage to crash the server and then restore two-week-old backups, thus causing all of the email from the previous two weeks to be lost.

Hotmail, its easy and simple.

Thunderbird question: Is it possible to have it sit in the tray (not the taskbar) and periodically check for new messages, and notify me when it does? Trillian will do it for my hotmail/yahoo accounts, but my LGMail isn't directly hooked up to an IM service, and it's nice to be notified whenever you get new mail.

I personally use Yahoo!, although I tried a Gmail account (sort of. I reactivate my when it out of beta). For my mother and her email, I have Thunderbird installed and my brother has a hotmail account. I also have a FirstClass email with the college, but I don't really use it much. There board are boring, with no one posting anything.
