i was thinking what is the most common maps ,mine is continents because by time you've got to the other continents you have a econemy to suport your and less waring and collonisation.
Smaller quantity of resources
A lot less Grassland
These tend to slow the speed of research right down which I prefer. It also makes less "sweet spots" available for really good cities meaning more warfare for specific cities.
The less resources also makes it more of a challenge.
It also makes coastal cities and cities on lakes more valuable (which is how I think it should be)
I really like the Fractal maps. Through this script, I've had pangeas, continents, archipelagos... I've had iceball worlds, desert worlds, and worlds with VERY interesting coastlines. I never know what I'm going to get.
Where's Balanced and Continents (should be added because quite a lot of people use it)?
I tend to change every now and then as I get bored with one type of map. I started with Continents, then Pangea, then Balanced, now Great Plains is my favourite... loads of resources.
now with warlords, i tend to play on fractal. i also like pangea maps for when i'm feeling lazy, and snaky continent achipelagos for special occasions.
I really like the fractals myself. Unpredictable terrain, and the layout tends to leave a lot of nice chokepoints/land bridges to glom onto and control/capture. I like the large areas connected by two or three 1 or 2 square strands.
Fractals really leaves you wondering what is out there. Sometimes racing toward Astronomy will give you an early colonization jump on good islands elsewhere. But sometimes, there won't be anything out there, and your Astronomy grab turns out to be a waste that puts you behind for the "home continent" battle.
Fractal keeps the whole game play less predictable.
Provides at least two non-sea borders for every Civ, and then the amphibious route is also available. Every AI can walk to my territory and vice versa, so no worrying about Phony Wars. Generally decent distributions of rivers and hills and such. Early wars are genrerally necessary to grab enough land.
Downsides- no real point to exploring beyond your borders except to meet everyone, you know what the map generally looks like. Fractals are nice for a change, but Inland Sea is still my favorite.
I like fractal - it gives me 2 or 3 continents with me and the AI evenly spread across them. I would choose custom continents but then I obviously know how any there will be.
