I'm generally skeptical about the use of an archipelago map as a part of the early learning experience. The AI is poor at managing water invasions and the human player with any sense will beeline the GLH, which gives him or her a huge advantage over the AIs who simply don't know how to 'play the map.' It's comparable to building the Great Wall when playing with raging barbs, albeit less manipulative.
That being said, Mehmed might be a good civ for an archipelago map, because he gets cheap harbors and lighthouses but isn't industrious, doesn't start with fishing or mining, and doesn't have an overpowered water unit.
