What settings should I, a beginner, play with?

Well, I've never completed a civ game, no losses or victories for me. I basically won a game on Difficulty level 2 but I was so far ahead I stopped playing that save. Now, on Difficulty level 4, I can't seem to get things right. I like Huge Earth Map with 12 players, but what settings would you guys recommend? Earth is big, so I want to play on big maps that are realistic. Also, I alway, always play as Russia because I like the country. I guess Domination/Science is my thing, but I'm bad at bpt, especially on G&K. So... What should I do?

The most important thing is you recognize what youre weakest on so you can know to improve. I love huge earth maps as well. Theres even a mod called play the world which is insanely large although you really need a beast of a computer to play it.

If i were you I would stay on difficulty 4. As long as it doesnt get you too frustrated, you need something challenging to help hone your skills. After you get the hang of things youll increase the difficulty pretty rapidly

Well, I was kind of hoping for more specific advice, haha. So I should keep my current settings... or??

Civ is such a diverse game there are so many ways to play it. Unless youre playing diety which requires more specific strategies two people can play successfully two entirely different ways.

Personally what I do is start by building 2-3 scouts (on huge earth/pangaea maps) followed by monument then granery. If im next to an agressive ai ill pump out archers otherwise ill focus on infastructure. I get the liberty social policy and get the free worker first use him to get luxuries which ill sell to buy settlers. Due to the hindered growth when you hard build them i dont usually build them.

I research luxury techs for whats around my capital followed by masonry and then catapults. The only wonder i care about is pyramids which stacks with the worker speed from liberty. After I get 4-5 catapults And 2 warriors I begin domination conquest. When liberty finishes if I uncovered enough huts to get a religion Ill get a prophet to improve it. Happiness for cities on river plus 1 happiness per city plus 33% speed of spreading means I have very little problems with happiness which is usually the main thing that hinders how fast I can conquer ppl.

For the most part I stick to the bottom of the tech tree and focus on upgrading siege weapons and ill go down the right side of honor tree second as it will give another 2 happiness per city (if you dont need the defense you can plant scouts in cities to act as military units).

Each game will be tweaked a bit by what else is going on but thats usually my general gameplay. Does that help a little more to what you were lookig for? Sorry about the bad formating. Hard to type adequetly on a phone lol

If youre going strictly for science I would look up the thread about occ diety science victories. A lot of it wont apply because it focuses on research agreements which require the ai to have amounts of gold they usually dont have on lower difficulties. If you need to you can always gift them gold so they would have enough to sign an RA. The thread should still be a wealth of information and you wont need RAs at the lower difficulties.

The optimal settings for my self seems to be: large, 6 players 12 city states, standard resources, standard (or epic) speed, and I usually play on archipelago or continents.

I just started a new game. I am all alone on North America except for 2 City States. Huge Earth Map with 12 players on level 4. Lots of wonders and room. Should I settle a lot? I found probably most of the ruins on my continent. I'm far from everyone except 2 CS and im on like t15. I'm following Veael's advice so far.

EDIT: LEVEL 4 DAMMIT! Typo :(

I don't know what your surroundings look like, but I'd probably go for a wide game with liberty. There should be a lot of room to expand and the AI won't be eating up land on level 2.

It was a typo haha, but yes. I am going for a wide game. I will post a save actually of a few turns ago.

My advice wont help if youre not next to anyone lol. Theres noone to conquer :P since you dont have any threats you can pretty much ignore military and focus on your cities. The main advantage to going wide would be to prevent an opponent from settling a city right next to yours as that would make them far more likely to attack you.

Actually, there is. France is at the very top where I didn't explore. He has an army a lot stronger than mine, and his troops have kinda wandered in my direction. I think it's time Russia defeats Napolean and recreates history, haha. Civ games need SEASONS! Think about it. So, its only me and him here, what do I do?

warlord the Ai at least tries to win

So you can lose but you get a lot of advantages so it shouldn't be a big problem

Classic approach would be to spam out a bunch of archers, and 2-3 spearmen. Get to Construction, incite a DOW from France, and then upgrade your archers to Comp Bows. After wiping out his invading army, it will be time for you to invade. Or just DOW him and invade, but be sure to whittle down his defending forces before getting into range of his cities. Shouldn't have much trouble on Prince, although if France is really far away you might drop a city as close as possible to him, to serve as a logistical base for upgrading and healing.

Well, I was like: I'll attack a little bit later. First I must build up my empire. Now France DOW'd me, and I don't have any units ready to fight, well, almost none. France sent a lot of soldiers my way, and they will do a lot of damage. I didn't rebuy ally status with CS just incase there is a better course of action. I just needed a few more turns... Procrastination... Now they are at my borders... But, remember the Russian army motto: not one step back! Haha, Russia should get a bonus for stuff like this :P

Also, I will not go another turn until you guys tell me what to do, I shouldn't have procrastinated, but now I'm in real trouble so I don't want to mess up.

Can you guys look at the attached save and tell me what to do? Thanks!

So, I'm pretty new to Civ 5 too, and played at prince and am only now getting into king. I find playing on a few different map types to be the best thing.

I maybe too much of a newbie to pontificate on things like this, but Civ isn't really a game that is tailored towards a single map or game-type. To make a comparison to another game I'm sure most of you are somewhat familiar with, League of Legends is balanced around it's 5v5 map. While there is a 3v3 one, the balance isn't there.

With Civ you can play on any map, with any settings, and still have fun. You may have certain advantages or disadvantages playing on different map types, like Dido on a water map or the Inca in an earlier planet age, but besides that what you're doing changes little. The fun comes from making macro-strategic decisions while doing micro-empire managing.

So, personally, I like random map type or just manually switching it each game. I like to see what new terrain offers me, and get accustomed to adapting to it.

The simplest answer is - play everything.
As to what you should start with, pangaea is good because you meet all the civs early, it's easy to war if you feel like doing that and you can still go for peaceful strategies too. Continents is also pretty fun, though personally I find war a little bit more difficult and I'm usually the target of the warmongers on my side of the map, so peace isn't easy either.
And just play whatever civ catches your eye. My first was Rome, followed by Arabia, but you can pick any of them, or all of them!

Thanks. I will play everything, but as of now I still need help on my current game. Everything was going so well then Napolean DOW'd me and moved a lot of troops to my borders. I don't have the units to fight him back. For those that look at the save: what skill level is required to win? Haha. I hate being DOW'd when I'm not ready.

Edit: Still waiting, because my situation is really terrible, or so I think. Just me? Still waiting :p I looked at the save again, and it still seems hopeless. :(

Your situation really isnt as bad as you think. You should play through it, I think youll do better than expected. Move your troops inside your towns and bombard the french with your cities while you build your military. He isnt sending a large enough force to really be a threat. Just remember to protect your workers.

Really? I have 3 combat units (Archer, Warrior, and Spearman). What units should I build? Comp Bows? Should I finish chichen itza? Switch to production in main cities and pump them out? Buy units? Also 2 CS's DOW'd me along with France. I am not that good at combat, just above-average, so I don't want a war to cripple my empire.

EDIT: So, how do I start up my army while maintaining my infrastructure? They will pillage stuff, and I don't like that. I will have to completely wipe out France. Also everything else, but that too. :p
