What single thing annoys you most about Civ VI?

The religion victory really is stupid. It gives an incentive for no other civilization to ever spread a religion other than its own. Add to that the very mediocre follower beliefs, and religion is pretty much stagnant.

Religion should be something that helps you, and those spreading it, win the game in other ways.

Religion is crazy good for other win types.

The overpowerful chopping.

If allowed to list more, I will say
1. The overflow mechanism
2. The District cost Rising mechanism

The AI doesn't use air units.

I mean they used them one patch pretty actively and stopped. WTH?

That bug where your unit doesn't activate when on a jungle hill is still there. It's really annoying. I thought this bug would have been fixed by now. It doesn't annoy me the most, but still pretty annoying losing a turn (or a few) because your unit doesn't activate as it should.

The late game because at that Point the game have probably been effectively won for a long time. The late game should actually have some serious relevance if you win or lose instead being a time of waiting to end the game.

Why the hell they kept the most idiotic thing from Civ V: cities having a ranged attack.

Especially late game cities are like some deadly turrets that one shot units to death. The problem is even bigger in Civ V.

That's what bombers are for, and balloons/drones for artillery.

The AI pop ups that tell me stupid things like "You follow Tlactel's words".
Yeh, they could implement these a little better so that you aren't forced to read them. Maybe the little head icon in the corner could animate to indicate they want to say something, then you could either watch the animation in full or just hover over the head and see what they have to say.

Maybe just something in brackets underneath saying what it is that actually means would help.
I actually don't mind the slightly cryptic nature of some of them, that can even be fun / immersive*, I'm mostly irritated by unavoidable and repetitive interruptions.

*I don't like the victory screen for example, I would prefer something themed, or at least more similar to Civ V's demographics, i.e. something that gives me an indication of the science leader but not the actual number of techs researched and science per turn. That extra detail could come later, in the information age for example, when it would be appropriate.

keep in mind that the AI turns normally time-out. As the game gets more complex and the choice of what to do goes up and an air unit has so much choice then the AI turns time out.

Two things:
1) The Late Game (TM). Long turn times and not much to do. It happens rarely that there is some exciting competition, which would help a lot. Can be avoided by doing DV or RV.

2) R&F. Easy to avoid though, since I just have it disabled. It‘s not annoying in that case.

Didn't know that, explains a lot I guess.

Nother annoyance, not sure if it's been brought up yet, no notifications for end of trade deals and conversions of your cities.

What?! Do they? Is this somewhere in the code, some specific value? If so, could it be increased, giving AI more time to calculate turns?

And does it mean a faster machine ends up with better AI? If you lower the graphics quality of the game, does that shift more computing power to other functions, allowing the AI to play better?

So many questions flow from that.

I am still in the first game of mine. So my knowledge from the game is pretty limited...
but the AI is only really annoying thing so far. AI really doesn't know how to win wars does it? Its really dumb, civ II idiocy to put it bluntly. I hope higher difficulties will somewhat mend that handicap.

The game still feels pretty good actually, and how it looks just keeps feeling better. These graphics will probably age well compared to all the other civilization games.

I hope higher difficulties will somewhat mend that handicap.

It just gets bigger bonuses to production and unit strenght, it doesn't make smarter choices.

Well, yes.... the world of computing is full of timeouts if you were unaware.

And does it mean a faster machine ends up with better AI? If you lower the graphics quality of the game, does that shift more computing power to other functions, allowing the AI to play better?
Yes, yes... you got it. Well, it is very likely it is working on elapsed time.... so the amount you have running will increase interrupts and number of threads you have and if your PC has a green CPU and so so so much more.
