What sort of drinker are you?

A question I thought of: does alcohol have any place in your home cooking?

A couple of weeks ago I made an excellent beef stew with onions and dark beer (Samuel Smith porter). Of course, wine is also the basis for many good sauces. So does alcohol have a place in your kitchen apart from simply drinking?

Of course!

Beer is for making chili, and bourbon is an important part of pre-grill marinades.

This thread is meant to be a light-hearted discussion about people's alcohol drinking habits. By the question in the title, I mean:

- how often do you drink?
- do you drink wine? beer? spirits?
- are you a fan of hard liquor? do you drink it straight or do you mix?
- do you enjoy putting down shot after shot?
- what's your limit?

and last, but still importantly:

- do you chase?

Of course, feel free to add your own.

I'll chime in a while after this thread is going.

(Note: let's keep this thread clear of discussions about obtaining alcohol, and focus on the act of drinking itself)

As of right now I drink once every other week heavily (12-25 drinks in 4 to 12 hours, depends on how long the day is..... we sometimes have BBQs at my house where guest are here from 6 pm to 6 am)

That is with friends, if I am watching movies or having dinner with the family etc I will make a a big vat of black mint iced tea and put 4 shots of rum in it and drink that in about an hour to get a buzz going, never more than that though I can't get drunk, drunk unless my friends are too. I can get a buzz though. That is once or twice a month. Also I will often have one beer with dinner if all we have is water and beer to drink. I prefer milk or tea though, in this case it is just for taste.... the small buzz is almost negligible.

So probably 4 times a month I drink.

Beer, wine or spirits?
Wine is good, but to expensive to get drunk on the good stuff, the wine that is about the same price as beer and gives you the same % of alcohol is terrible so I don't mess with it.

I like beer, it depends on the kind of beer though...... Well in so far as the first 4 beers, after the first 4 it doesn't even matter what kind they are since my tongue is more relaxed by then.

All kinds of spirits are okay, nothing special, except Rum. I love rum. I can drink rum straight with just ice and lime and it is a great drink.

Other shots are fine, I like to chase with beer. If I am in a hurry to catch up with everyone else drinking I will chain a few.

Girly mixed drinks are fine, but take an eternity to make and are to expensive when you go out. I say if you are going to make some make a big vat so you are not stuck in the kitchen all night. + the extra calories are not really needed, a rum and coke will do fine for something sweet.

Usually in a night of heavy drinking I like to get the first four out quick, So I will have my favorite beer in the first hour, if there are only beers that I don't like I will get some sort of spirits and coke (preferably rum) if not that some smerinof ice or something else like that. After I have a nice buzz going I can start to really pound'em. It sounds odd, but it take me forever to get drunk on crap beer just because I hate the taste.

If all there is is crap beer, then I will just have to chug them, a beer bong is preferred there too.

Also, I am quite partial to flip cup as well, I am great at it.

I don't drink, but if I did, I'm confident I would be the 'Mere guy.

I'm a casual drinker; I imbibe beer, vodka and whisky (rarely). I never get drunk; being drunk just means you don't taste the liquor anymore - let alone enjoy it. Usually I don't even have liquor in the house.

Sure does! Usually just beer, for stews and chilis. Or roasts - when doing a roast on the rotisserie on the BBQ, something needs to be put in the drip tray to help keep the roast moist and beer is great for that. There are some recipes I want to try that involve wine, so that will probably happen eventually.

Very very much so. Wines in stews and soups and sauces, bourbon in chili and a bean-veggie dish I make with tacos, 'rita marinade, and some pretty damn extravagant liqueur-soaked desserts and snacks. :)
