What system will I need to play this?

We're obviously still in speculation mode since it's very early, but based on past trends and current games, what do you think the system requirements will be to play this on a PC? I'm going to be in the market for a new computer. I don't think it'll need a top of the line gaming computer based on past trends. What do you think?

Just for fun, what would be the minimum requirements to play Civ8? ;)

Besides past trends, what tells me that the game will be playable in certain low- and mid-tier systems is the fact that it’s being released for PS4, Xbox 1, and Switch.

The leaked screenshot looks really beautiful from what we can tell, but I’m sure there will be a way to compromise settings to make it playable on lower end hardware.

I hope so. The laptop I bought four years ago was supposed to be an investment lol

Hard to say, but I'd expect a PC with say two gens back of GPU to run it reasonably well, and min req being even lower?

I wonder if CiVII will run on Linux.

I’m wondering if Civ VII will actually run on Switch, or if it’s just a placeholder for Switch 2. Both are coming out in 2025…part of me thinks Civ VII will probably be too tough to run on the current switch. I have pc anyway but it’s something i was surprised to see.

You can bet on it. Linux is already listed on the Steam page and they’re for sure going to want to have full Steam deck compatibility (SteamOS is Linux-based).

SteamOS is linux based but runs a lot of compatibility software for Windows. So while it should run on Steamdeck, supporting Linux is a bit of a nightmare for developers, there's too many distributions to successfully bug fix for the very, very low amount of players that end up on it. Essentially Linux is a money loser for game developers 99% of the time.

Otherwise I can see this coming out on plenty of platforms, I do suspect "Switch" is code for Switch 2 or whatever it'll be called, but otherwise if it runs on Xbox One it will run on your even semi recent laptop.

Yes but Civ 5 and 6 are both in Linux and like I said, Linux is listed on the Steam page for 7 again. I’m sure it’s coming.

Civ VI's minimum requirements state a Radeon 5570, which is a mid-tier card from 2010 - six years before VI was released.

The GPU market has been a bit wonky the past few years, but I wouldn't be surprised if the equivalent were something like a Radeon RX 570 - a somewhat higher-end card than the 5570 from 2017, or eight years before VI was released.

In terms of what you can buy today? I doubt you'd have any problems with a 3050 or higher, or a Radeon 6600 or higher. Probably lower than that will work too, but if you're in the market today and want to play VII, that's what I would look for. Toss in a six-core Ryzen 5 CPU, doesn't matter if it's current-generation or an older one, and... 16 GB of RAM? and you'll probably be fine for moderate specs and medium-to-large map sizes.

Thanks for an answer. That's what I was looking for. Civilization generally doesn't have top of the line requirements, but it is higher than my crappy laptop can support. The goal is to get something good enough to play Civ8 as well, ideally.

I run Doom Eternaland Lies of P almost perfectly on highest settings, so I expect my laptop would carry it fine overtall...

...until it came to terrible AI turn times

On the other hand, turn times seem to greatly depend on 1UPT system (one more reason I dislike it) because Humankind had better graphics than civ and comparable scale while having lightning fast turn loading times

Doom Eternaland
At first I was confused how iD had released a carnival-building Doom spinoff without me hearing about it…

Then I saw the typo…

Now that this last blurry video came out, it came out before the video from the 20th august. (

What do you think the minimum system requirements will be to run CIV7? I would like to ask this question to see what your guess is and then see how much it varies from our answers before and after watching the video of the first 20-minute gameplay.

I hope that my humble notebook (i5-3317U (1.70Ghz), Intel HD graphics 4000, HD - 1 Tb + Ssd - 248 mb, RAM memory - 8 GB) will be enough to run it. Because in CIV6, I reduced the graphics/animations to low and then it was able to run normally. I hope that in this CIV7, despite the 3D graphics, it will be possible to reduce the graphics so as not to weigh too much on the GPU/CPU processing capacity and then it will be possible to run on older/weaker machines.

You’re running a 14-year old mobile CPU with integrated graphics and only 8 gb of what is assuredly extremely slow RAM. Unfortunately, I have a hard time believing that your laptop will give you a pleasant experience with the game.

Intel 4000 graphics? Doubtful, this is a new game released waaay later than that old thing.

I guarantee you that it will not. The CPU is very slow in single-threaded performance and is too weak to make proper use of any parallel code a modern engine has. The GPU doesn't even qualify as one, integrated graphics cards are years behind dedicated ones, and with a 2012 onboard GPU you're talking about graphics hardware equivalent to a GPU from maybe 2008.

As a 2025 game, Civ7 definitely targets much better hardware. Even considering that Civ is typically less graphics intensive and supports older machines well, older in this context means 6-7 years. Given how it usually goes, a 2020 machine will almost certainly run Civ7 smoothly, a 2018 machine will probably run it okay, and if we're lucky, 2015 machines may manage to run it. A machine with mid-range 2012 hardware, not a chance. I'll be impressed if it can even load into the map.

Old World runs fine on my aging system. i7 6700, GTX 1060 6mb, 16 ram. I think it will be OK for Civ7, otherwise I just watch the streamers play.
