I remember when my family first got our good computer (not an old P2 piece of crap) we paid Best Buy and they did some things to help our computer supposedly. I remember that the guy went into some menu and unchecked a bunch of things. Any idea what he did?

unchecked a bunch of things..... not without knowing what OS no probally not. Its possible that he went into msconfig and played in there... but I dont recommend ppl play around in there unless u know what u are doing.

I can't remember the last time BB sold a computer with an OS other then Windows.

As to the question at hand, without knowing some more detials he could have done any of a million things.

true enough marine corps, but what version? 98, 2000 xp? they are all different in alot of ways. But with out knowing more theres no way we can help.

Theres a lot of things that they could of done, some will improve security. Like they might of disabled the guest account which is one of the ways hackers can get into your computer.

Possible answer based on given details: Windows Explorer: Tools -> Folder Options (at least in win2k) -> View tab -> check everything that's unchecked and uncheck everything that's checked (more or less) :D
This should make Win Explorer a usable file browsing tool...

Okay. To clear things up, it was Windows XP and I think he said he was doing something to get rid of pointless things, possibly things that automatically run or something. I don't know much beyond that.
It's not that it's super important, but I've never wondered what he did until now. So thanks anyways!

Well in that case, assuming it was a checklists type menu, then he most likely was modifying what programs run when the computer boots up..

with XP:

start --> run, type "MSCONFIG"

go to start-up tab

uncheck anything you don't like starting up with Windows..... if you don't know what it is, google it. Essential items are not listed, and even if you were to uncheck them, Windows XP wioll turn them back on.

Still would recommend checking google before unchecking though.... Iamnotageek.com has a good breakdown of most items you will find in there.
