What to do with a strong navy?

In my 2nd civ 6 playthrough I've ended up with a very strong navy. I got lucky in map placement and I've not really had any wars, but having this navy has made me realize that I don't really know what I would do with it. My thoughts were:

1) Set up a trade blockade of all enemy cities.
2) destroy structures on reachable tiles with ranged naval attacks

It kind of feels like a strong navy in the early to mid-game isn't good enough at attacking enemy cities, but is my impression wrong?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Other than what you said, you can protect your own sea trade routes, make invasion very difficult for other civs, use a carrier to have a mobile air force, and even capture coastal cities with naval units. A strong navy is a very formidable weapon, especially defensively, that can travel great distances in shorter turns.

I find that navy is good to protect your land military units when traveling trought sea (best way to reach civs that are far way but are near the coast).

early era's:
Build a Quadrireme/melee unit connection then run around finding all the villages and barbie camps to get stuff from. 2-3 of these make for good clearance of land masses that you might other wise forget or not get to quickly enough to collect stuff from. I know this does not really answer your Q but sometimes people just need suggestions.

The AI is not all that in a bag of chips at this time when it comes to warring. SO why did you build units you did not really need? Just curious as I stand by NOT building units unless I have a purpose for them already planned out. They cost money/time to build and so on.

Also what level are you currently on for this game?

playing on default, prince I guess?

what has happened with the units is that I had some great admirals with good activations that I wanted to use. I also had quite a bit of gold and a very water heavy map so I bought a lot of early-game naval units to explore the ocean without being at too much risk from barbarians. upgrading them over the years has left me with really the only powerful navy.

I'm not claiming to be good or anything, I just was wondering how one could take a military that is primarily naval and use it to actually win a war in the middle eras.

Basically pillage the coast, and stop the AI from being able to retaliate (since they can't get harbors). Conquer coastal cities too... Or provide ranged cover for a beach landing (drop of troops backed by your ships and fire at the defenders)
