What to do with first general?

I'm in the beginning, circa 13,000 BCE, my second GP turned out to be a general and I have absolutely no idea what to do with him. In vanilla I use to attach them to units that eventually became crack troops, but here? Could use some advice.

I usually build a military academy in my "military city". There are not a huge amount of military training buildings early on so it can give a big advantage
