It may just be me but Firaxis seems to be playing an interesting little word game. The developers keep touting amped up diplomacy and no religon. This makes it seem like they are simply improving on the original game. But then gamespot.com said this-

"we're assured by Firaxis that the feature wasn't simply cut without any plans for other new features to replace it"

I don't know about you but I think they are replacing it with something deeper. I suspect something around costumes which would work along side the new governance system. But thats just me spitballin' thoughts?

Yeah but it seems to simplistic to write it of to just that. IMHO I think (or hope) they have another goody in this game but Im not sure.

Ooooooh I sure hope they make fancier costumes in Civ V :D

or one of the features of the entrirely new diplomacy system which was the reason they were removed in the first place.

I would have assumed City States and Research Contracts.

I'm still a little dubious as to just how effective City States can be in diplomacy. It might just make more sense to stomp on them to stop them being a problem. Why not just be friends with another civ than one city?

Then again, having an ally who isn't also trying to win the game would likely make a fair bit more sense. Think I just disproved my own point.

Will have to wait and see, looks interesting at the very least.

From what I gather, city states will have their own tech tree and unique abilities that are lost if the city is conquered. This is intended to provide a strong incentive to protect them.

Kind of like the goose that lays the golden eggs. ;)

Pardon me Customs:blush:

I assumed, I was just teasing. ;)

I think what they're replacing religions with is the new Civics/social policy systems, which is supposed to be very in depth, but they've discussed it very little so far.

I got a question about barbs and citystates do they all have their own tech trees?

Well I think the "social policies" will help to mimic the "Religion Civic" and possibly have diplomatic effects as well (2 Theocracies won't get along too well.... they shouldn't even if they are the same Religion because they will probably be slightly different sects)

The one thing they Do really need to add is more 'internal diplomacy' ie politics/culture... ways to influence your opponent's cities to cause problems for them... and ways to influence your cities to stop that from happening.

Likely African city states will have their own tech tree as well as European, Asian and American city states.

Hopefully Barbs will have their own tech trees as well. That'd be pretty cool. :goodjob:

You think they'll let us say capture those techs kinda like in the Genghis Khan warlords scenario:D

I dont think that different city states will have different tech trees. partly because it'd imagine it'd be a heck of a lot of work to change the tech tree based on a tileset, and also because I'm guessing that the State attributes are not fixed. In one game City State X might be millitaristic, in the next it might be scientific.

I think the point is that they gift you bonuses which you might not otherwise get if you conquer them-bonuses to research, techs you don't have yet, bonus units-that kind of thing. It comes down to a choice of what's more important-the city & its surrounding territory-or the unique bonuses that they grant you? In some respects its shaping up a little like the White Lies/Black Ops mod from CivIV-minus the espionage ;)!

Aussie.

You might be right, Krikkitone, but it won't replace the joy of founding Buddhism or Taoism in my games ;).

Perhaps religion will simply be integrated into the civics system. I can't imagine that they would remove the religion element entirely, even though IMO the religion system in Civ IV was a colossal failure. *puts up flame shield*

What will replace religion.

Common sense, hopefully.

To answer the question; they said specifically in a preview, that what would replace the religion has yet to be revealed. But I'm not sure how literally we should take that.
