I'd say on average females have better voices, but the odds are against them. For one thing, popular music for female singers is unequivocally crap, even compared to male popular music; the female singers themselves are trained to whine, wheeze, moan, everything but actually sing; and the image problem [no rack, you're sacked] is really weighing on them.
Also, although males are on average worse singers, their very best can outdo any female. Lennon/McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, etc, are not going to be outperformed by any woman singer I know of today.
That music is so terribly not suited for female singers!Originally posted by addiv
I don't know if that would be such a good idea. I once heard a woman sing Paint it black, and that was one of the most horrible things I've ever heard.

There are plenty of great female singers out there that sing better than Lennon and McCartney and Simon and Garfunkel
Okay, so name one.

Boys.
Female voices are necessary for various parts in Wagnerian operas, but that is about it.
Same for Mariah Carey. Her range e.g. is unbelievable.Originally posted by Dumb pothead
Just one? Off the top of my head, Najma? You guys seem to be confusing singing ability with song writing ability. Christina Aguilera produces horrible music, however, she has a beautiful voice. If only somebody would get a hold of her and make her sing real music. Same thing with Brittany and all the other singer/go-go dancers out there today.

You wouldn't mind if we went back to using castratis would you?
That reminds me of something funny. You know that group Sigur Ros? When I first heard their music, I thought it was a woman singing and that she had one of the most beautiful voices I ever heard. I would fall into a swoon when I heard this 'womans' voice, I was in love. Lo and behold, one day I look up Sigur Ros online and discover to my horror that theyre all guys!!! To make matters worse, I had raved to a friend about the group and said that I had fallen in love with her voice and she must be beautiful etc.! Blörk can sing very very well. Only there aren't that many people who like her way of singing.
