What units do you guys/gals put in your army? or should I say, your ULTIMATE army?

I'm thinking it would make up of all modern armour. But elite or veteran? I seem to have a good supply of either of them at this point.

I'm asking this because it seems that I can't extract a unit out of the army once it has joined, and I don't get an army very often...

Thankx

First of all; once you've gotten a successful army, you can build the Military Academy and produce as many as you like :)

Personally I don't like using armies for attack after I'm able to build MA's. The reason is simple; Modern Armors can attack 3 times, and will in almost all cases (atleast if you plan your attack well with artillery/bombers weakening your enemys defense) be successful - while the army can only attack once IIRC.
Because of this I normally only use them for defense in the modern Era. I like to stick 4 Mech Inf's in them, all Elite, and fortify 2 armies in each city.
Because most Mech Infs are veterans only (cause I use them for defense, not attacking enemy cities), I use them to take out small scattered unit encampents after taking over (an) enemy city/ies. Their attack strength are in almost all cases strong enough for this.

2 armies with 4 Mech Infs each, and 2 artillery units, all fortified, is an almost inpenetrable city defense :)

In general, I would not put Elite in my army unless it is a *Elite.
I will keep my Elite in order to 'fish' Great leader, with the help of Arti and a bit of luck it should not be so scarce.
However when come the age of Modern Armor, it is so easy to get Elites units, that I will put them in the Army.

How does work a mixed army?
The game uses the best offensive unit in the army to attack.
The best offensive unit in the army will attack, using its own stats. If that unit loses as many hit points as its experience level would indicate, it retreats and the next best offensive unit takes over, and so on.
The converse occurs on defence, with the best defensive unit fighting until it loses its allocation of HP, then the next best, and so on.

In a given mixed army (an Elite Swordman, an Elite Archer, a Vet Musket and a Vet Spearman) the swordsman would always lead off when attacking, with attack strength of 3. If the army lost 5 HP while he was attacking, the Elite archer took over, now attacking at only 2 strength. If the army then lost another 5 HP, the veteran musket would start attacking. If that unit still lost another 4 HP - still in the same fight - finally the spearman would begin attacking.

This means that mixed armies can be of much use in the early game. Every time the army attacks, it does so with a fresh batch of HP assigned to the leading unit; the entire process is repeated anew for each combat. Even if a 14-HP army lost 6 HP attacking on one turn, the next turn the army could attack again and the swordsman would have five fresh shots with attack strength of 3, without needing to heal in-between. Basically, the swordsman could draw on the HP of the spearman and use it for strength-3 attacks.
The same thing can happen on defence, with the musket getting a full 4 HP worth of strength - 4 defence even against multiple attacks on the same turn (although the AI almost never attacked the army.)

Suppose you filled an early army with three horsemen, then load a knight into the army after building the Pentagon. When the army attacks, it will do so at 4 strength; and can make 2 attacks in the same turn both at strength 4 using only one knight, since the knight will get a fresh allocation of the army's HP assigned to it for the second attack.

Promotions are assigned based on whatever unit is currently doing the attacking or defending when the army wins the battle. This is why it is very hard to get a 19-HP army promoted to 20. For that to happen, the first three elite attackers all need to exhaust their 5 HP allocations, then the last veteran must win while the army has 4 HP or less remaining.

There is some weirdness when the army gets very weak, with the game switching active units in the army frequently during the army's last 3 or 4 HP. The best guess I can make is that each unit is guaranteed to have at least one HP assigned to it; attack with a 4-HP army and the best attacking unit will only attack until it loses 1 HP. But however that works, you can't really make use of it in combat.

I generally don't like armies until I can put my best units in them. Such as MA or MI. Although I don't do MI very often.

That being said, I was in an (early for me) war with Egypt (I was Sumeria) and spawned a MGL. Things weren't going as well as I would have liked for me, so I used the MGL to make an army, and put Knights in it. So now I've got a fairly decent attacking unit (which does blitz, barren, no matter what unit put in) and Cav just coming online. Generally, I'd want Calvary, but in this case I needed the army earlier. Did it help? Probably, I didn't lose any cities.

A four-calvary four-movement/attack calvary army is a pretty serious contender, until MI come out.

In C3C that army has been given many new features that make it very useful (extra movement, blitz ability, free pillage?). I tend to load my armies full of my most powerful attacking units (all vets) and find someone to smite.

Oh yeah, i've forgotten about it and the Heroic Epic! I should see to produce one in one of my cities now. (i'm a bit embarassed to admit that I have my first MGL at around 2100 A.D.)

<What's in your army?>

capital one

for the first army, whatever is available to get the heroic epic:

3 vet swordsmen
3 vet medievals
3 vet knights

if the d00d who spawned the leader is still alive/available i will put him in the army.

once the first army is used to win a victory i will use it tactically and try to keep it alive. i save all further leaders and burn them to make wonders or turn them into armies and just park them in a town until it can take

4 vet cavalry or
4 vet panzers

if its possible i try to save as many armies as possible up until panzers. and i'm usally the country who learns tanks first. so not only do i blitzkreig everyone, but i do it with 10 4x armies.

so what is this 'modern armor' i hear people talk about? is that in alpha centari?

ps - conquests is ****. i use my disk to reflect sunlight to rescue planes when i'm shot down in hostile waters.

I prefer to put *Elite units that can't be upgraded (e.g. Cavalry). If I get a MGL early, I put the victorious unit and perhaps add some other *Elite units later. The only exception is Ancient Cavalry: when they become obsolete (because e.g. my opponents have Pikemen or better defenders), I usually fill AC armies with veteran or Elite AC's.

Best regards,

Slawomir Stachniewicz.

If I had to choose, then it would be cav for me. Good in attack to the ind of the game, and great for pillaging.

In AW games I like spearman armies for protecting cats and wandering around pillaging. The AI won't touch them until they get cav usually.

I use what ever the best offensive unit that I have at the time to make my army.

The dream army would have 4 modern armours. Doesn't matter if they are elite or veteran because they would get promote any way.

In practical game, my utilimate army would have 4 cavalries (with one 1 elite to lead them).

All Cavalry Armies are good, no doubt - great movement.

But how about TANKS?

Tank armies are weak on defense. Infantry slows them down.

How about this?

Tanks + Mech Infantry - 1 Tank and 3 MI or 2 / 2, what you want.

You will get a better defense and still have 3 attacks, Blitz Ability of Tanks is "lost" a bit because the Army has already Blitz.

I usually get Mech Infantry way before Modern Armor, and it was really annoying that Tank Armors can lose a LOT of HP to Cavalry and especially Sipahi.

Put one Mech Infantry in the Army - almost everytime the same attack strength, as JMK explained, and a much deadlier defense, no loss in movement or number of attacks.

If you have a city that you absolutely cannot lose the an army or two of MI would stop almost any onslaught

IMO, the "utimate" army is really based on its strength in comparing to your opponent at the time. For example, if you are going to take on the world at the beginning of your middle age, then your utimate army would be 3 chinese raiders. Since I rarely see any tank in my game, the cavalry would be my utimate.;)

If your just going for Heroic Epic, be aware that you don't have to put 3 units in the army right away. Put 1 unit, win a battle and build the Epic. When the next gen. units are available you can complete the army with 2 of them.

I would never suggest to take such a risk!

I always put veteran modern armors in my armys, as my ultimate armys. I dont combine them cause i use them as an ofensive unit, so i need MAX atack power. And Berrern my armys atack more than once, actually they atack 3 or 4 times, not sure, at least in conquest.
