What's the best successor to MOO2?

MOO3 is pretty bad, isn't there anything that comes close to being similar to MOO2? The closest I've found so far is Galactic Civilizations 2, but it's still not quite the same.

None that I have tried. I actually do not even have any of my Gal Civ games installed and I have both and 4 of the 5 expansions. I have played some Moo3 of late, with Strawberry and some other stuffed add it is at least some entertainment.

Sword of the Stars, providing you are ok with real-time combat and turn-based strategy. It also removes a lot of the annoying micromanagement aspects of MOO2, while keeping all the depth and replayability.

In my opinion there's simply no good successor to MoO2, some have tried, but even with neat graphics, they dont come close.

I have Galciv 2 too, but dont like the civ style map and unit movement and the colony management stuff.

I never have been able to get any 3d/rts space games, just issue with how my feeble brain works I guess. I get the demos and never get past the first thing. Some of them I really wanted to play, but no go. Swords was one floped at.

Distant Worlds is another one that came out, but no demo. Armada 2526 they still seem to have issues with.

I did play Space Empires IV, but for some reason did not like V. The bad thing is that now you cannot find any of the games in discount bins as they do not exist any longer. In the past you could go out and find a game like Reach For the Stars and buy for 4.99 and see if you like it (I did not).

The only one I see from time to time is GalCiv and I am glad it is around to get some support. Armada would be due for the bins about now, but when I asked GameStop they said they never had it when it was new.

Online sales are fine, but this 39.99 and 49.99 for online games sight unseen is not going to cut it for me. I may take a flier at lower prices, but not retail prices. I think it is a well established fact that when you lower the price you get more interest.

I was thinking of starting a Space Empires 5 - Galactic Civilizations 2 comparison thread. I played GC2 at a friends before and borrowed his SE5 game, but have not done much with SE5 except load it up and play a little one evening. Not had the time yet to return to it. They seem to be very similar games in the way they work. I like the SE5 interface better, it's customizable.

I've never heard of Sword of the Stars before, I'll have to check it out.

You could still play MOO2 using dosbox. The graphics are way out of date, but the game is every bit as playable as it's always been.

Sword of Stars, GC2 and SEV didn't do it for me. SOTS might be OK if you get all the expansions that let you capture planets (instead of having to wipe out entire races), do more with diplomacy, etc.

Yup, it was Win7 that forced my to DosBox, XP was fine, except the mouse sticking.

Swords Of The Stars collection only seems to be available on the digital download sites. I tried to find it in the old fashsioned way.

You could always try ebay or craigslist. I'm sure there are many people with copies they aren't using.

Only the original version came up in my search and it was on Amazon. Did not Craigs, never think of it.

Edit Ebay does have it. Problem is the are all outside of the U.S.

Distant worlds seems promising. Though I'd have to play it a bit before I can say whether its ok or not. Seems complicated though. So much stuff... And it wants to play itself to a certain extent though you may take control. Hope it aint as badly done as in moo3 :)

The closest I could find is:
http://cosmicsupremacy.com/

It is similar MOO2 style of system management with some advanced options.
It adds a 3-d map that you can zoom.
customized ships.
and it is inheriently multiplayer because it is online with about 25-45 players, no AIs.

Most of the single player games don't stack up to the original MOO and MOO2.

If anybody has feedback on this, I'm be happy to read it.
