What's the big mistake? There is a patch on STEAM and I am curious to know what the deal is with it.

There is also a patch on the Direct2Drive site. They do seem to have their patch es up before Firaxis. It's about 77 MBs. I'm sure it will come out soon from Firaxis. In case anybody wonders, I've pasted in the read me about what has changed in the update:

In his defense, the other thread is in regards to MP. I considered merging the two threads, but their focus is different.

...and to be fair, nobody seems to know what the deal is with the patch, so the question is still valid. You have to love a 77MB patch that doesn't seem to do anything other than break MP compatibility with previous versions...
Yeah, it's pretty bad when the only change we've heard so far is that it breaks MP games!
Anyone know exactly what the fixes are?
