Keep seeing it mentioned as a type of torture.. can someone expliain what it is.. and also why it is justifiable doing it specifically

What about google? Well..

Something like this. It makes you think that you are drowning while you actually aren't. Used by evil dictatorships all over the world and the USA.

Yes it is torture.

No, its not ok. Yes its torture. Yes its against the genevia convention. No, the rest of the world doesnt care if Bush changes the definition of torture he uses.

IMO waterboarding is alot worse than good old fashioned sleep deprivation. Keep somebody awake for a week or two and he'll lose all touch with reality, and happily tell you anything you want to know. Afterwards, a couple of nights of solid sleep and he'll be good as new with no permanent damage of any kind.

Mythbusters did a show on this. The girl was 'tortured' more than the guy was. They guy (Tori?) Looked like he could take it for a long time. But the girl didn't last very long.

wasnt it the chinese water torture they tried in mythbusters? That involved dropping a single droplet of water every 5-7 seconds or so onto the victims forehead, braking concentration and making the experience unbearable...

Nah man :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_water_torture

This doesent have to cover peoples faces and "simulate" drowning. Its just designed to keep you from getting any peace of mind, and thus being a terrible experience, where as in waterboarding the point is to fake drowning, which I would assume is pretty gruesome too...

See, the way I remember the show was they were getting a feeling of drowning.

But it's been a while since I've seen the show.

If they can find a board big enough, now would be a good time to waterboard Dennis Hastert. After all, if it is good enough to protect us from terrorists, it should be good enough to protect us from those who cover up for child predators.

Hard to find enough water for Hastert too, might have to take him to one of the Great Lakes.

Try taking a cold shower and sticking your face right in front of the showerhead. If you're like me, you won't be able to bear this for more than about three seconds-- the immediate reaction is a peculiar tightness in the chest and throat that forces you to pull away from the water. I imagine waterboarding is significantly worse than that, and of course you can't pull away, so you would just suffer terrifying pain.

True enough. Cold water is nasty. Although only when its a shower. Then its really nasty and constricting, and it lasts. If you just jump into a hole in the ice cut into a lake then it lasts like a split-second and after that ts ok, and then its much nicer to go back to the sauna :D

Terrifying pain or terrifying fear?

And define right in front. A common problem I face is bashing my head on the showerhead when I forget to be careful, that thing is pretty dam hard.

I believe this is torture, but the term "torture" can be applied to many things. For example, I find listening to the music my sister listens to as torture, nails on a chalkboard (I got a chill going down my spine just imagining it), etc, etc.

Sure, it's alright to use. If your name's Pol Pot.

It's a Holiday in Cambodia

Well, it's a strong avoidance impulse, and a strong avoidance impulse which you can't act on amounts to pain. It's like a powerful gag reflex that you're unable to satisfy except by removing yourself from the flow of water.

The problem here is that when you use torture to describe listening to your sisters music, you are using the word figuratively. Waterboarding on the other is torture by the definition (literal) of the word.

Bush isn't changing the definition of torture. He is arguing that the terrorists are not subject to the Geneva convention because they uniformed, identifiable combatants.
