What's your best goodie hut tech?

My favorite is popping a goody hut with Modern Armor and getting .... a warrior! YARR!

i played on a mesopotamia map (sry, forgot who made it), but it had way too many goodie huts. I had metal casring, IW, and HR before the wheel. It was fun...

I think it was Currency ...

But the stangest situation was with augustus :
first hut : scout
second hut popped by my first culture pop : Bronze working! coool...
Third hut : IronWork!!!!!

But no iron in sight! Damn it! :crazyeye:

I just popped iron working before 2000 bc, and the iron was under my capital. Seeing how I had found no copper at all yet, that was a very pleasant surprise!

Did they decrease the Goodiness of Goody huts. I am pretty much coming back to Civ after being a Civ II freak years ago. I remember constantly popping "You have found scrolls of ancient Wisdom" almost every game. Now, I think maybe out of 10 games I've played i've popped 2 or 3 techs. Also, can you still get Settlers out of goody huts? I remember back in the Civ II days if you got a settler out of one of those huts you were really really happy.

I wish you could pop secret techs like "ancient martial arts: all melee units +10% against other melee units" or "herbal medicine: secret cure for AIDS, +1 health in all cities".

In all seriousness though, goody huts are probably a bad idea. What we need are less barbarians moving around randomly, and more barbarian cities and co-ordinated barbarian assults.

you can only get settlers (and workers) from huts at the lowest levels. i think below warlord, maybe at warlord too. the chances of "high money" and techs go down as difficulty goes up but it's still possible. i got pottery out of a hut in one of my first deity games and triple-checked the settings screen i was so surprised!

edit: i checked the .xml and i was wrong! the chance of a tech is the same from noble all the way to deity looks like. there are 20 lines of what you can get at each difficulty, in CIV4HandicapInfo.xml. noble-deity each have "tech" as two of the lines. sure seems rarer as i go higher tho!

settler/worker is only possible below noble level. at immortal and deity "high gold" isn't even on the list, but "low gold" still is. not surprisingly, the chance of "strong barbarians" goes up, and at deity it's apparently the highest chance of any of the results (6 lines of the 20, next highest is low gold, 5 lines). scouts and explorers never get barbarians from huts, at any level. i think huts popped by culture expansions are always never barbarians either, but i can't point to any coding proof of that.

hmm, it does seem that way. probably because the ai explores faster and faster on higher levels, and your explorers are killed off quicker. therefore, on higher levels you get fewer goody huts.

I usually pop Astronomy playing on Terra maps. Often being the first to the new land I drop off some explorers, and its usually the huts in the northern tundra that gifts me astronomy. Have also popped astronomy a few times playing on Archipelago maps. I've noticed the AI don't accompany their Caravals with explorers all that often, if at all. It's a strategy I have to race to Optics on Island or Terra maps, eventually almost aways netting Astronomy early from the huts.

Wow, that's funny. I can just picture the scenario:

"We're just a small village of hunters and gatherers....and we also love our books. Care to peruse our selection of Greek classics?"
