These are my upcoming favourites too. As for the moment Persia (obviously) the Ottomans (excellent UU) and the Chinese.

American. Admitedly due to some patriotism, but also because I tend to play the style they're suppose to play like a lot.

Otherwise, a peaceful civ, like Persia or Egypt tends to be in my eye a lot to play.

Heh, nope. I am Anglo-Saxon with a bit of Norman in there too.
But I have delusions of grandeur.

The Ottomans are almost unfair, with the Sipahi, at least with my play style. I usually do 2/3 of my conquest with cavalry, and the Ottomans just make it that much better.

After that, probably Scandinavia or the Aztecs.

1. Germany - I love scientific and the Panzers. But I won't play this non-industrious civ in PBEM when the other human has industrious. So it's my SP favorite.
2. Chinese - Industrious trait with super UU. My PBEM favorite
3. Ottomans - Industrious / Scientific AND best UU make this one too powerful vs another human and an excellent civ to start with a higher level / bigger challenge.
4. Vikings - I am not fond of the traits, but the berzerk is almost cheating in PBEM. No player wants vikings vs them.
5. France - Industrious / Commercial is superb. Same traits as Carthage, but I hate the Num Merc (too expensive).

England! I'm a real anglophile. They aren't exactly great in the game, though. I can live with their traits, but their UU needs modding. It's good for triggering a late GA, though.

France since their industrios and commercial witch helps out in the late game

Greece -- the hoplites are available from the start and are the best early defensive unit in the game. Since I normally play at the emperor level with 24 civs and a 240 width x 180 height map, there is immediate contact with people. I am also much weaker that the others so defensive is everything. The hoplites are the best counter to barbarians too. I get the 24 civs by creating a scenario and doing a random map there.

It has been done numerous times. So I'll say it again: Egypt is my favorite civ. Industrious and Religious are the best traits in the game (in that order too).
