When can I cancel a trade deal?

Really two questions. First, when can I cancel an ordinary trade deal -- like, rice for fish -- without incurring diplomatic penalties? Any time? After X turns? Never?

Second question: Qin comes to me and demands a resource in tribute. I have the resource to spare, so, what the hell. Can I cancel that "deal" after X turns, or must I continue supplying Qin with deer forever unless I want to incur a penalty?

Thanks in advance,

Waldo

You can cancel:
after ten turns
by starting a war
if you no longer have the resource to supply

These don't incur a penalty (except the normal ones for a war)

There is a negative penalty for stopping trading with someone when requested by another Civ.

You also lose accumulated 'supplying us with resources' positive modifiers when you cancel.

Accumulated points towards an additional +1 modifier are lost, but current modifiers are not lost on cancel. It takes many turns to get +4 trade relations, and longer (with strategic resources) to get +2 supplied us with resources.

All the above also goes for extortion deals, meaning you CAN cancel these deals after ten turns. I wish there was an automatic reminder for this.
