When Civ1 doesn't work on your windows version...

There is also something called Civ4Win which runs under windows, havent tried it since I've installed XP. But it run under Win 98. It should run on XP to, at least in compatibility mode.

I play mostly Civ2 cause its Civ1 with better graphics. Also I like to listen to the "High Council" occasionally. They are hilarious.

Just tested my copy of "Sid Meiers Civilization for Windows" ver 1.2.0, and it runs *perfectly* under XP. :)

There are 3 different programs that count as "CiV.1".

1. The oldest ( -imho- best ) 'original' archgame-of-strategic-games CiV.1 for DOS :D
(~1991) (5 different exe - versions 474.01 ... 05)

2. Civilization for Windows (developed for windows 3.11; i presume)
(aka "CivWin" & "Civ4Win" & "WinCiv" - some different versions - 1.1. and so on)

3. CivNet (~1993)
( created for windows 3.11 as well as win'95 - 16bit; as far as i have seen 2 or 3 version updates )
(Internet & LAN Multiplayer possible (...up to 8 players at once) -
see ---> Civnet contacts thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=89930
the game CivNet itself is something 'in between'
* CiV.2 (~1996; purely developed for win'95 - 32bit );
* WinCiv
and
* Civ.1.DOS ...

- i would type
CivNet
is the best "Arch-Civilization-Game"
because of it's unit movement speeds and the 1:1 gameplay we all love
but
-sorry- the CivNet graphics look -imho- crappy... )

Compare CivWin, CivDos, and CivNet

So this thread is because of Civ.1.DOS problems with winXP
or/and
those people that get runtime errors with DOS at win98se and winME...like
Code:
run-time error R6003
- integer divide by 0
(happens sometimes,
but in most cases you simply have to restart civ.exe
2 or 3 (or up to 10) times
and it runs in windows' own DOS-mode as well...)

-
WinCiv and CivNet are (already) running
with windows versions win95, win98, winME and winXP

so DOS.BOX won't help
:p
(as far as i understand 'DOS' as DOS.6.22 (for example) -
because
WinCiv and CivNet are programmed/designed for WiNDOWS' ( windows :D )

if somebody has interest in a perfect working civ-based netgame
he/she should give freeciv a try

Where can I get an update for the windows version of Civ?

Hmmm.... Folks keep saying that they have no problem with running CivNet in Windows XP. I've followed the instruction of copying wing.dll to the Windows folder, but that didn't help the issue.

Whenever I try to run either the Installer, the WinG Setup or the game itself, it tells me that the "Win16 Subsystem has insufficient resources to continue running. Click on OK, close your applications, and restart your machine"

Uhm... I'm sure my computer likely exceeds the recommended specs for CivNet, and I've also tried the 'compatibility modes' to no avail.

Any Ideas as to how to get around this?

Heh... I forgot about CivWin... hey whattda know, I still have a copy!
On the back of the box, it says the Min Reqs are:
386SX
Win3.1 or later
4 MB RAM
256 Color support
5.6 MB of HD space (what, it can't make up it's mind? Which is it, 5 or 6???)

Man, that's old.
It's on 4 1.38 MB 3.5" floppies. (!not 1.44MB!)
Copy protction? Well.. yes and no. The disks themselves hav NO copy protection, but rather the manual acts as the copy protection.
Every once in a while the game will ask you which technology is on which page in the manual. Answer that wrong and it's GAME OVER for you. Very damm annoying.

And no, I'm not selling my copy. Too valuable as a collector's item.
:king:

You can get it here: [link removed]

You can get it legally by looking on eBay, for example...I got mine in a package with some other old, "classic" strategy games. Civ1, although it's old, is not abandonware, and you can buy it if you look hard enough. Of course, since it's old, it's not very expensive!

I removed the link...

It says even on their site, "...This is why abandonware sites are, for the most part, ignored by the law. The distribution of copyrighted software however is, and will allways be, illegal!"

I guess I figured since they were so open about having the stuff that it was legit...guess I was wrong. I own my copy, got it on a compilation of that & colonization (not that I know where my CD is). I found the abandonware site when searching for a copy of twilight 2000 which you simply can't get anymore (probably because it's about the "future" in 1995).

Civ1 for Mac came out shortly after that; had the same gameplay but far superior graphics.

So let's see if I understand correctly.

Under XP Civ1 DOS probably won't run without DOS Box.

Civ 1 for Windows will run under XP.

Will Civ Net run under XP? That's what I am unsure of.
