When do you build embassies?

I tend to wait with embassies until I want to make diplomatic treaties or have need for an investigation of the capital. So usually about 3-4 for of my opponents a huge map with 15 AI civs open embassies by themselves (on Emperor). It seems to depend on how much money they have (like spying in general).

I build them asap and use the info to manage my tech trading and wars.

See, Gainy, that is where your play style is different than mine ... ...I pretty much only go for cultural victories

I've only won by culture 3 times (all OCC's), and i've had the game since 2001. So yeah ;)
What level do you play on? My experience, on Warlord to Emperor, is that the AI is very slow with opening embassies.
I only really play on Emperor, the AI aren't that quick to establish embassies. But by about 10 AD in every game, I will have 'em with around half of the surviving AI's. Not bad IMO :)

I'm another believer in the ASAP strategy. Same thing goes for intelligence agency and spies.

ASAP. If only for capitol locations of far away civs. Knowing "where someone lives" is always a good thing. Particullarly if they are the Aztecs!!!!

As soon as I get writing, I start making my "emabssy machine". I find that the rep bonus makes up for the cost in short order. Plus the intel is worth it's weight in gold. I have also lowered reaserch to get an embasy with my enighbors as well.

I use embassies for three things:

1. As a place to setup alliances & ROP, you can't do these without one

2. To get an idea of how much defense their capital has before starting a war, check to see how big a garrison is there and what resources are connected

3. As a means to steal technology before espionage is available in case my opponent has a valuable tech, won't trade it to me and is in no position to cause me any damage if the attempt fails, ie across a wide ocean before Astronomy or with a potent tribe between us

Embassies tend to enhance the AI's view of your civ. On lower levels this does not matter. On higher levels, a civ declaring war on you before you can build sufficient troops can spell disaster.

I play on emperor and buy embassies as soon as I need ROPs. I usually sign a ROP with any civ that I am not interested in or unable to destroy, almost always for free or cheap. This will boost your rep with surrounding civs and will prevent the huge tidal wave of other civs coming to the aid of my victims(where my victim gets a civ to ally against me, who then gets a civ to attack, who then brings a friend, on and on). This seems to be very common on Monarch and up levels. So all the people who cry about the AI always ganging up on them read this and do it. If the AI civs do try to pile on, it will cost them more because of your good rep with others and will prevent most if not all intervention. In conclusion, I buy embassies with all around me asap, mainly for protection through ROPs, then start picking off victims. When ROPs come to an end(20 turns is shorter than you think early on), find new victim and sign new ROPs with the others.
