When should I move up?

I have been playing Civ II for some time. I almost always play as warlord. At this point I can always win without cheating (including saving and restarting to get good "huts").

In basically every game I play I get all wonders, have all technologies plus 10 to 20 future techs, plus all squares have farms and railroads (I even turn mountains, hills, and forests into plains/grasslands for bigger cities), plus the largest possible spaceship, plus all throne room updates (no cheating), and I usually get to Alpha Centauri by the late 20th century.

In my current game I did all this by 1863. I'm trying to see how big a civ I can get. I have 70 future techs and its just 1935. I'm waiting to launch the spaceship.

Do other people find warlord this easy and when do you decide to move up to harder levels? To be honest, I feel a little devasted if the AI player manages to get one of the wonders, such as the lighthouse. I've never tried playing multiplayer, always with 4-7 AI players.

thanks.

Nephi,

Easy thing is to say is move up when yoou want to!

I would seriously say play a large game at Prince then move up immediately to king.

Win or lose King is a tester of a good player.

If you struggle or need help mail me. I now a few legitimate short cuts.

Move upto join the big boys!!!!

See you at king or Emperor.

Jules.

Ps if you need help mail me at Barkerjules@hotmail.com

I agree with the above. I based my movement up on : Winning game (either by domination or space race) against 7 civs. If I won, go to next level - usually against 3 or 5 civ's, and work your way to 7. When you've beaten Emperor on 7 civ's ( usually on a large world, in my case) , you're going to have several tactics based on situations, will know decent "routes" through the science tree, and should be a past master at managing your Cities. Which is good ! Because you need it on diety !!!

I almost never go back down to a level after winning on it - unless I'm back from a sabatical ( I often don't play for a few months ), or have somthing I'm trying. Hope this helps- but it's just my opinion, and there are much better players than I, at this site. See their responses for clues!

Nephi- If you are totally dominating the game, isn't it boring for you?? It's cool to try new strategies and stuff, but if you want a challenge, you should move up the difficulty to test your skills.

well nephi, played civ 2 for years on warlord before moving up on the difficulty. Like kremlos said, it got boring winning so easily. You get a better challange on the higher levels and more importantly, higher Civ scores.

I am disrespectful to Dirt! Can you not see that I am serious?

If you are winning that easily nephi I think that you are ready to move up. How far...Try stepping up the difficult one level with all the same settings.

I'm not by any stretch of the imagination the world's greatest Civ player, but it seems to me a good rule to follow for deciding when to move up is: If you are asking the question, it is probably time. Think about it; if you were constantly getting your butt kicked by every upstart civ that appeared at your doorstep, you'd be too worried about staying alive to even think about moving up. But if you dominate every game you play and there's little or no challenge left, you may start to think about moving up. That's the time to do it. Like the others said, it would just get boring otherwise. Or so it seems to me.

I play at Prince most of the time. Came close on King but when I move up with the big boys I just get betten, a lot. So Emperor I get slaughtered and Diety I get destroyed. Lasted until 1800's once at Diety before my demise. My musketters and cannons can't hold out against their Armors and Calavery!!
Anyway.
Like the rest say you can move up slowly, if you want to always win, or what I prefer is to jump in at higher difficulty and get roasted. Then you know what to expect. Also gets you prepared for playing humans too. Then you can go back and move up more slowly.

CornMaster, your at the same level as me! I can't go passed prince, because once on deity, I was doing really well-6 cities while the others only had 3 or 4. Then They went into civil disorder, and everything halted. I eventually got killed by the others when I had 90% of the population entertainers. Same thing happens with King. I guess I'm not that good compared to people like SunTzu, and that guy who got 2000%.

Hey Nephi! I would say you're LONG overdue for moving up, especially if you're launching in the 19th century. Just make a resolution and refuse to play warlord anymore!

Prince is well within your capabilities. The AI civs are a little tougher on you at Prince level, but not much. (But at least they don't cheat on production like they do at King and above.) You've got to watch the unhappiness a little sooner and that's mostly it. DO IT NOW!

My own high game was on Prince (302%) but I always play on King level nowadays. It's a nice relaxing game on King while still being a challenge to do something special - like a really high score or a very early landing. (Going to Emperor or Deity takes the relaxation and therefore some of the fun out of the game for me.)

Anyway... no more questions Nephi... Make your next post the one telling us how you did at Prince level!

Move up. That's all I have to say. Meet new challenges and try new strategies. I play all levels depending on whether I want to win or lose or just have a really satifying game. I play prince most of the time but I can play diety (and yes, that means win too). You see I play the game based on whatever it is that I am doing...say a scenario, regular game, modpack...whatever..

The last diety game I played I think I had like 858 percent quite some time ago, and just not too long ago I play tested a star trek scenario and ended with a rating of 1090 percent in prince...The other day I finished a game in chieftain and only had 300 percent (testing another modpack)...but whatever the game or way you like to play, be open to higher levels and don't be intimidated by them because it makes the game you like play a lot better!
