From what I'm hearing, everyone is pretty much agreed there is a good chance that Civ4 will be buggy when it comes out.
Why? Because of Civ3 Vanilla and it's associated expansions.
What difference will this make? Absolutely none. The majority of Civ fans will still get excited, pre-order the game, pick it up, start it up, then see that many of the features don't work right, the game crashes for no reason, and the multiplayer isn't as good as it is in C3C.
There is an old saying that applies well to this: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." The PC gaming industry has been notorious in years for releasing games months before they are done just by riding on the hype they can generate. The Civilization series is a clear example of this. There are SO many fans, they can be sure that even if the game is barely functional, they will still make a handsome profit when they ship. I really don't blame them because they've gotten away several times before, why shouldn't they do so now?
Sure, eventually, in a few months they have worked out most of the major bugs, then stop supporting it once it's no longer convenient for them. We shouldn't have to settle for this, especially now since there are so many excellent mods for C3C out there you could easily spend months playing, not having to worry about major bugs.
Personally, I find the frustration of a brand new game too (especially the Civ series) too much to warrant buying it fresh off the press. I propose that we wait to buy the game until we know at least 1 other person who has played Civ4 and genuinely thinks it is an improvement. There is no other way to get the publishers to change their attitude than by to buy the game, even just a week or two will do it, until we know the big bugs have been fixed.
I for one will continue playing C3C mods well into 2006, until Civ4 is a final product. Hey, I might even save a few bucks too.
