Why do you feel awesome when you play civ 4?
Me:
1) When I get a great general XD
2) When I see the message that shows the destruction of another civ at my hands. "The Aztec Civilization has been destroyed... again!"
3) Whenever I play Civ 4 tipsy
4) When I manage to win victory - only bc the ending video is great
5) Destroying another civ when playing as a backwards people - I.E. my latest domination victory, I conquered the world with Trebs and Macemen even though everyone had riflemen. Massed numbers - success!
6) Putting your research slider back to 100 after war and seeing your gold go from 591 to 0 (-56/turn) after 10 turns

Gaining gold at 100% research with a large empire is always fun (shrines :D)

Turning a terrible starting position around , especially via crafty diplomacy . It initially sucks to get plains cowed and lose your scout to the first lion that appears.....but getting to alpha and causing WW3 is always fun.

#2 and #5. It always feels like a nice breaking point when I've finally totally eliminated another Civ. And the come from behind victory is so satisfying. Say taking Mali on Earth18 or my favorite, Maya in RFC. Even though you had to turn down the difficulty you still like it.

Culture flipping that annoying city they settled right up your nose.... and DISBANDING it :)

I just played two games at emperor, my current level of difficulty.

In the first (pangea)I seemed to start badly, got dogpiled, and generally played what I thought would be a lost game - but I won !! The dogpile didn't hit that hard (someone must have got bribed and took his time getting his SoD together) and I improved my starting lands by adding in someone elses.

Then I played a fractal game, an old bugbear of mine, and thought I was going to get it easy. Then an enemy peace-vassaled to a friend and all hell broke loose - the game took ages, lasted into modern times and had me fighting a back and forth war against my high-tech friend (hatty) while one of my vassals whacked one of hers - world war !

Two games that even a few months ago I would have lost on monarch

So I feel AWESOME right now :)

I feel awesome when creating my own economic bloc made up of vassals and running mercantilism, and keeping out rival civs from making gold.

How does mercantilism help? It seems like a loss because of no foreign trade routes...
Also, do you have trade routes with vassals with mercantilism?

It helps when no one will open borders with you, either because you don't know anyone to open borders with or because they hate you (via being in a war with them).

Yes.

...or a bunch of settled merchants + specialists in your Wall Street city :)

I enjoy a good ol' ROFL-stomp and vassal-fest myself. Extra props if you can get rifles up and running while the AI is just starting to figure out what gunpowder is.

Even more props if you vassal a Liberalism-whore (Willem, Pacal, Liz, et al) and force them to research backfill techs while you head toward Lib.

I don't do it much anymore, but on occasion I would enjoy getting an IND civ and if I found stone and/or marble, seeing if I could snag every world wonder. I've come pretty close on Monarch, losing only a couple of minor wonders like henge or the GWall.

When I finish a victorious game and watch the replay on fast speed.

My colors go NOMNOMNOM on map.

Right now I feel as awesome as I ever had for a Civ start

I have a mate staying with me who is seeing Civ for the first time . I have been trying to win some deity games and he has loved it but gotten a bit sick of seeing maybe 5 or 6 admittedly valiant defeats . I've talked it up that I can consistently win on immortal regardless of spawn and thus dont want to play it , till he finally got sick of it and said "well let's see it" .

I let him choose Washington and got what seemed like a nice start .Dry corn , riverside hilled pigs and a heap of forests . From there it want all downhill . (Marathon , huts and events on , fractal , huge map) . I didn't get a hut and my warrior died to the first lion . I researched the wheel then AH and horses were seen on a terribly marginal location but fairly near .

I was getting pounded by barbs but had some lucky wins , and after having to wait 5 turns with an idle settler (due to barbs) I settled right on the horses and just managed to connect the city before I got overwhelmed by barbs . No happies anywhere

Mao appears nice and close , but PRO and starting with mining doesn't appeal much but I hoped by chopping and whipping like a madman ( CHA would help) I could overwhelm him with sheer numbers and got lucky that he didn't have copper.

After what seemed like WW3 with barbs , I had 6 nicely promoted chariots and a woody 3 warrior plus 2 stray warriors . The barbs finally eased but BW was still 20 turns away ! Then what did I notice ? Mao still had not discovered BW ! Here was my chance and I launched my little stack straight at Bejing . I won 2 30% battles and grabbed his WALLED capital with my last warrior .

And then on the turn when I finally reached BW , I got the free golden age event !!! I've only ever had it once . I could not believe my luck . Needless to say , I was able to finish him off reasonably easily. So Mao is gone and I have Hammertime and Alexander right next door . One of my worst starts looks like being a good game .

TL , DR I know , but it was such awesome fun

Among other things, this. When I'm wrapping up a game and know that I have enough troops to finish and that the end is close enough to refrain from building anything, every city makes Wealth. If I'm running a surplus at 100% science, it means I'm just putting the icing on the win cake. :D
