where do i build roads?

Not really I tend to either cottage them or farm them. (not incense of course) Cottage dyes and get good commerce right away and then when you have calender change it to plantation. That way you get use out of these resources prior to calender. Sugar for instance on a river farmed will get 4 food so it's useful to still do something with them.

The wine is useless until you get Monarchy, the sugar, incense, dye, and spices (did I miss any?) are useless until you get Calendar, so you don't need to road those right away. I like to farm these tiles when possible, though, before the tech lets you build a plantation, because of the bonuses.

The roads aren't necessary. I usually farm because I can't bear to raze a mature town.
