I'm a civ 4 veteran, new to civ 5. I want to play a fairly peaceful Carthage with plenty of trading and going for a Cultural win. This is the start I rolled:

Going coastal on the river delta makes total sense to me. I reckon on the left - where the Warrior is now - would be ok; lost of commerce, luxuries and food. But what if I settled on the right, instead?

I know about terrain and resources enhancing city tiles in civ 4 Anyone spare a minute to bring me up to speed, here?

Settle in place, don't embed the image next time. Also, the resolution of that image is terrible, are you playing on a phone?

Roll again. Make sure to get an ocean start.

In place would be a good start, but settling where your warrior is now would be better for trading in the long run. If I were you Id settle where the warrior is.

I would settle on the sugar. You want the coastal river as Carthage and settling in top of the sugar gives it to you instantly upon researching calendar. This saves a ton of time since you need bronze working to clear the marsh before a plantation otherwise. You can then use the easy happy from it to settle a second city quickly.

Don't restart, where's the fun in always getting a perfect start?

Settle on Sugar, next to your Warrior. It will only take 2 turns to get there, you won't be that far behind and you'll get access to 3 Lux really early and it's gonna be coastal. That will be crucial when trading, due to Cargo Ships and Resource diversity. Also, it's river+mountain which would be good on its own.

P.S. Don't photo your screen, use screenshots instead. :p

Don't forget the Observatory and any other Mountain based Wonders available from on top of the Sugar. :king: Plus the sooner you'll get to Cinnamon as well.

do NOT settle where the settler spawned go where your warrior is, settling where he spawned is terrible advice because you are going to be out of range of some of that workable spice over there on top of not even being able to get your free harbor as carthage!!

1. You can get the cottons, sugars, sheeps, and cattles but you won't have a coastal city to start off with (Quinquereme are the Carthaginian's UU) and you'll only get one spice
2. You get all the resources there but you won't have a coastal city to start off with
3. You'll be missing out on one cotton but you'll have a coastal city and a pretty good defensive location

Why did you skip Sugar between 2 and 3? It's totally worth to settle there, it would take ages to work it anyway due to marsh.

That ^^ and you get closer to some hill tiles and you get next to a mountain. It is a really good start imo.

I second settling on the sugar. The missed turns aren't that big a deal, but being on the coast as Carthage is a big deal. You get free harbors, your capital is generally the best place to trade from, you want those sea extra long Carthage routes.

Second biggest reason, the mountain. That's 50% extra science with the observatory, and you'll open up machupichu which is abusable as hell with your free harbors, and that cinderella castle thing is awesome too

Third, those spices.

Imo there's no question. Unless for some reason you don't want a large capital.

on sugar right to the warrior. river + ocean + mountain = strong start. as others mentioned, you dont need masonry to improve sugar, just calender and bronze working to get the other lux.

On the sugar as mentioned above. You'll have at least 8 resources, 5 fresh water tiles and 5 hills. You don't have that much food though, so you'll want to have a go at the Hanging Gardens and found a second city purely for the food trade route.

I would probably settle where the Worker is and then plan a second city on the coast and/or river to the east towards the spices (it's hard to see if you can get another coast/river city which is a win combo) but on the downside this will not allow you to get the Observatory (lame rule), and since an Observatory in your capitol can make a huge difference, the Sugar is definitely also a good spot to settle. Don't settle anywhere that's NOT both coast and river.

Thirded. You'll only lose 2 turns getting there which can easily be made up. I always aim for coastal cities now as the trading bonus is huge.

I settled the sugar. Turned out there was a massive archipelago nearby, so this became an interesting trade game. Fell behind on tech whilst trying to culture inland Polynesia (IKR), won on timeout.

I can't really screenshot as I'm not playing on my own computer these days :(

I'd settle where your warrior is, You'll get Sugar, Cotton, spices, cattle, sheep, River for trade.

Only settle on the sugar if you want the observatory that badly.

Coastal Capital = FTW
