Which Civ to pick?

I have been wondering if certain civilizations are better in general than others. It seems that in all of my games, Germany and Russia do remarkably well. I know that the creators of the game probably tried to make all of the civilizations equal, but lets face it, thats virtually impossible. The only way i can think of to make the civs equal is to turn off the civ-specific ability button at the bottom. I tried doing this, but I don't think either Germany or Russia is in my game. I was wondering if certain civilizations seem better to anyone else, and also if certain abilities help different victory styles. Thanks everyone!

The civ attributes are actually pretty well balanced. But some do lend themselves to certain playing style better than others.

It makes sense that a Militaristic civ, played in a militaristic manner, would have a better chance of achieving a Domination or Conquest Victory. A Religious or scientific civ would have a better chance of a Cultural Victory.

Personally, I think the powerhouse combination is industrious and commercial. +1 shield and better workers and +1 commerce with less corruption is a huge bonus and probably makes the Spaceship Victory (my favorite kind) that much easier.
