I never build the Oracle, but I usually get Liberalism first. My high cost options are Nationalism and Printing Press. Nationalism is a little more expensive, but Printing Press gives me more immediate benefits by pumping up my village/town income. What do you choose for either free tech?

oracle: --> code of laws.

most people will i thinlk. in a very rare case i might select metal casting.

liberalism --> nationalism

and start working on the Taj right away.
in rare cases i choose divine right.

Unless i can wait if im ahead of AI, then i go for something more expensive. industrialism is best i got on monarch.

Yeah, I used to take CoL from Oracle when I played at a lower level and could build it while prepping for war.

for the oracle, depends on situation and with Liberalism, usually economics, for the free great merchant.

I get beaten to the Oracle quite a bit, but when I do build it, I generally get Code of Laws (or occasionally Theology).

I'm virtually always the first to get Liberalism, and almost exclusively take Astronomy as the free tech. Being able to get some colonies on unsettled islands and sub-continents before anyone else is pretty nice (especially if it allows you access to resources you otherwise didn't have). It also allows you to build Observatories, which can offer some help with maintaining (or getting) a tech lead.

I usually don't build the oracle (the AI is to fast) but when I do build it I choose Code of laws or Metal casting

From Liberalism I almost always choose nationalism, then build the TM for a golden age.

Oracle -> CoL if that tech takes more then 35 turns (on marathon), if less then Metal Casting

Lib -> Gunpowder when playing Eth, otherwise the most expensive tech around

Oracle I pop Code of Laws.
Liberalism I get Astronomy.

Usually get both on monarch and get COL from oracle almlost exclusively and often go for gunpowder with liberalism as it advances me towards Rifling which is often the turning point when I start my main war. I know its cheaper by 3 or so turns at that stage than nationalism and I think the Taj is too expensive. If I can get to rifles enough turns before everyone else, sometimes before they even have muskets, then that big midgame war is where I win the game so worth it. I have never got something like astronomy offered on Monarch, may be i'm jsut slow. Are people playing Monarch and getting Astronomy?

Oracle --> Metal Casting
Liberalism --> Economics

Oracle: civil service for prince or below, CoL for monarch or emperor, can't get Oracle for immortal/deity.

Liberalism: rifling for prince or below, astronomy for monarch or emperor, nationalism for immortal/deity.

Don't usually build Oracle, but if I do, usually Theology, Code of Laws or Metal Casting.
Still, I prefer other wonders, such as Stonehenge, The Great Wall, The Pyramids or the Great Lighthouse, or perhaps just another settler.

Liberalism, it depends. I like Astronomy, or Scientific Method. I can even pull off Biology sometimes. Democracy is also good if I want to start growing my cottages good.
