Which of those people would you classify as "white"?

Which of those people would fit in your definition of "white"?

You are being pretty anal about it. you can use a modern standard with minorities aside. Say, 1900's or so? I don't know. Each country is different.

Example -- USA is predominantly "white". France was, but there's been enough migration to have several blacks as well. Spain in general is an interesting "gray area" as they could be classified as white or other. In America, many people call Europeans white, with the exception of Italians and Spanish (in particular), where we tend to specify them as such, as they are more mixed these days.

This thread was doomed from the start. Being basically built on an unscientific classification.

Why are you saying this? There is no false classification, it is true that people DO label people from certain countries as white or non-white, and it doesn't have anything to do with the Arabic/Jewish/Asian/African/Russian/Italian immigrants in that country, obviously, or with the [whatever] minority existing somewhere in that place. It is meant to be by origins, and it is meant to be an opinion poll, so to see what others think. To me, it sounds like nitpicking to the extreme. :)

We? when? I think I missed the meeting. Italians as a mix? with what and what?

Saying a black guy doesn't look like a 1900s French mainlander is fair I suppose.

Italians have a darker skin tone, enough to say they aren't white, but close enough to the white end of the spectrum to be called white too. Thus they tend to be called "Italian" in America. Similar concept for those from Spain. Europe is much more evolved in that sense, obviously, so times are changing.

The point of the thread was to help define the general population majority of given regions. It was based on what to classify South Americans as, since someone in Europe called them "white", while most Americans call them "Latino". I raised the comparison of Spain, as Americans tend to classify them to their own group, asking if they were considered "white" in European lingo.

By no means are we lumping everyone into a group, rather it's a generalized discussion to reflect how different cultures describe other cultures, based on skin tone.

What I'm saying is that if you try to take populations, and categorize them in a way that is unscientific( ie: White): What you'll inevitably end up with is people taking and adding different populations based on convenience or personal preference and/or prejudice.

I'm not even necessarily picking on this thread but, society's method of classifying folks in general.

Obviously it's meant by origins, not current standards with immigration added...
Frankly, I would like to meet that guy which is "ethnically French" since the dawn of times. Who's the one? The Alsacian guy and his traditional germanic culture? The Basque? The Corsican? The Guadeloupean?

Steph is a Savoyard and Savoy is only French since a century or so. Is he ethnically French? What about Hannibal Barka and his North African roots? Am I with my German and Algerian pied noir origins?

So is a French guy someone having all his ancestry living across the loire Valley between Angers and Orleans? :/

read my last 2 posts, I answered this already. (slow typer?) ;)

'Frenchness' is determined in the moment. Today, most people would know what 'French' means, just like people 500 years ago would. That these two definitions of French are somewhat different, is irrelevant. Its the current moment that counts;)

You know, very few people are white. We're all really shades of pink and brown.

I agree 100%! Of course nobody is white in the scientific or fine arts sense. That's exactly why we have all these gray areas (I really didn't realize the pun until a few seconds ago :D) and I asked this question, because nobody is in fact "white" so I want to know where exactly do other people draw the line. :)

I know, but don't you think not more than ~10% is totally free of racism?

It depends how you define it,

like kay my Anthropology professor told my class that Black people reach sexual maturity early (I.E. first sexual experiance)

(all of these are averages)
Black: 13 -15
White and Latino : 15-17
*Asians: 17-19
*American defenition

And that because of this thats why young black guys commit more crimes  and why asain girls are so shy till college. Both true AFAIK. I love having black people around they are like the lime with my rest of America Corona ;) - due I think it's true? yeah sorta. I have black friends but, I accept that young black guys get in trouble a lot. Am I a racist?

I think at least 85% of people my age in Vegas are at least as non racist as I am. Older people - I dunno but, we do get les racist as the generations go on. And I only can really speak for my little corner of the world.

The Average (insert race here) person gets mad at a whole group of people when one person wrongs them. I think it is a genetic respons thou - All those chinese etc etc

As I've gten lder I do it less and less and I know it's irrational. I think everyone else is coming around too. :goodjob:

That's an extremely interesting point of view - NEVER heard it before. :) Do you consider white as racist against the whites or against the others? And do you also consider "black" as racist? If so, against who? And do you consider other terms concerning people's appearances as racist (like Aboriginal, Asian, blond, etc)?
