however you want it. which game in your opinion was better. technically, game wise, immersion wise, whatever you use to define "better". I personally don't really remember, but I enjoyed cIV enough that I stopped cIII cold turkey and haven't played it since so I voted cIV.

That's it for me pretty much, too.

Me too. Maybe ciV is buggy, maybe it is dumbed down, but it is still new and shiny, and, well, even more "new" with all those changes. So I enjoy it so far, and play it exclusively!

Why don't people just use 'Civ5 or Civ V' - is there a general desire to use slick abbreviations?

Oh heck, I'm biased. Anything else Firaxis had done was better than Civ3 pre-release, upon release and post-release with all of the upgrades. :D

Comparing the versions of Civ is like comparing great boxers. Everyone knows Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest pound for pound fighter that ever lived, but then inevitably, someone comes in with a little cog to mess it all up.

I can't vote in this Civ poll because I don't have the credentials (+2 frowns at join date). I played Civ III on rental from the library and really liked it and then I learned about IV and bought "gold edition" for like 50 bucks and then bought bts for another 20 or 30 (best buy has the greatest impulse buy deals - +2 frowns for best buy's deals).

Why is this in a civ V forum? Why not in both the civ IV and civ III fora?

because I didn't think to post it there instead. I don't play those much if at all anymore (especially cIII as mentioned) and I honestly didn't even think of it. It was inspired by a conversation we had in the "jon shafer is gone" thread. besides it seems that the vast majority of civ5 players also played civ4 and cIII so the comparison is valid. If I posted it in the cIII or civ4 forums then there would likely be a strong bias towards the game that the forum was talking about, while this forum is allegedly "neutral".

Then I would suggest it get cross-posted in all three fora.

I'll go check the other forums. If nobody has posted it there then I'll post a link to this thread so that there is one poll for everybody.

I also just use Civ 5 or Civ5. It's clear & simple. (Ah, advertising brainwashing. That's an acne medicine slogan, isn't it?)

Using CiV, CIV, cIV, etc... just feels like I'm trying to use 733t speak.

There were plenty of things wrong with Civ4 at launch, but I preferred it anyway... mostly because I felt it had a much higher ratio of decisionmaking : busywork. Civ3 could feel too much like accounting for my tastes.

I voted for Civ 4 at launch. I had several issues with the game at the time but I found it hard to play Civ 3 after a few games of Civ 4.
