To me there's just downright bizarre game mechanics that don't make any sense considering other game mechanics; City state benefits scaling with era is fine on the face of it except that great scientists can bulb you all the way up into a the renaissance in the BC era. And even then, after you think about the exploit it makes the base game without the exploit seem dumb; wouldnt it be better if the benefits of the city state scaled with something like diplo relations and technology era and a competitive AI?

Welcome to the forums. I share your pain as do many others. :(

Oh... Well, thank you. I kept my post short and too the point because I figured I would get flamed pretty hard because it was my first post.

My #1 hobby has always been strategy games, and the Civilization series has always been at the top of the line for me. I was very excited when I found out that Civ V, was coming out and I spent several days in extreme anticipation.

I beat the AI, in a humiliating fashion, on immortal the second game I played.. I was in shock..

But - oh well, to me I felt just as good to go back to Civ 4..

Because, yes, I was expecting some sort of evolution of Civ 4.. I don't think that is too much to ask considering it is called Civ 5...

Mr. T - I think you will understand what I mean when I say... "Civ V just did not set my monkey free."

All this poll really proves is that the community is divided on whether it likes the new addition to the franchise. Show me a leading game series with a strong community that doesn't exhibit precisely the same thing.

The title and purpose of the thread/poll is also deliberately divisive and emotive, so no surprises there then.

Not at all. I for one am glad that threads like this exist on these forums. The mods are quite good here. Try going over to the 2K Games forums. They are like a police state where all criticism is stamped out unless it is so extreme and bizarre that they leave it up to ridicule people who dare criticize their game.

It does show that there is significant discontent with the half baked, unbalanced mess called ciV. It's important to tell the Emperor that he has no clothes.

No one is forcing anyone to vote against their feelings. Vote how you feel.

As noted before, no likee, no clickee.

I'm not saying threads like this shouldn't exist just that I generally feel they are ultimately pointless.

As a source of constructive feedback, it's not a good way of organising and discussing the valid shortcomings of the game, because, as I said threads like this tend to elicit responses that aren't conducive to that. I think threads like the civ 5 issues thread (which I believe exists both on here and on the 2k forums) do a far better job of promoting discussion, presenting useful feedback, and compiling it in a way that's easy to digest.

Collating it into a poll does nothing to change the opinions of anyone on either side of the argument- it simply leads to a lot of posts arguing that 'you're wrong the game is great and not dumbed down at all' and 'no, you are x feature is clearly inferior to what we had in civ iv'.

This is only my opinion, of course, but what threads like this do is present valid criticisms in such a way that often lead to arguments and flaming rather than real discussion. My point is, is it better to complain about what's broken, and argue with others about whether something is bad or not, or discuss what could do with changing, or what's missing without making judgements that are ultimately non-constructive?

Civ 5 is dumbed down and needed a few more months to be a quality product. Need proof ?
Just look at the rivers in 4 and then compare to those in 5.....case closed

I can't believe you've let this clown troll you for 20+ pages with his laughably pitiful understanding of polls and statistics.

... no actually it makes perfect sense.

If you actually read the OP I state my basic reasons for why I believe Civ 5 has been dumbed down. The mods don't consider a thread trolling when you back up a poll or thread topic with a reason.

If you have anything other to say about the thread topic other than accusing me of being a troll, then please, enlighten me. ;)

Could we organize a class action? If 500 voted on this thread, at leat 5000 would partecipate, that is more then enough to have the money back and teach 2k a lesson!

I'm pretty sure that you can't sue someone for having products you don't really like. It isn't like they had some sort of crazy guarantee. Heck, we even knew many features before the game came out, we just didn't know they'd be so... badly implemented.

There should def be some type of bonus for us getting a non complete game. Maybe free expansions?

Sadly, betatesters bonus is ability to play the game before all the others. And Civ series are so awesome that in order to become one you have to pay roughly 30GBP. There's your bonus :D

unscientific poll is unscientific.

Well back when most of the people were here right after their first few hours of play and were voting on first impressions, these polls were happily used to discredit the detractors as a vocal minority. But now that the folks arriving at the forums have had a chance to play the game a while and the trend has swung heavily the other way, the polls are meaningless.

This isn't Stardock. You can't expect a big name developer to do that kind of thing. What we've learnt from the experience is that the core Civilization series is no longer infallible as it had been for 20 years - next time I won't be so eager to purchase without giving it due diligence.
