I think it looks "pretty" and is beautiful because it is so simple. I wish they would replace unit icons with the actual unit artwork for this view instead of the unit type symbol (like the hawk symbol for the scout). I really like the unit artwork. No, I'm not saying I like the Strategic View more than the default view or that it's better or vice-versa. No, this isn't meant to be a ranting thread, although maybe some unproductive whining. Who else likes the Strategic View and why?

I really like it too and it's a good thing I do. I may have to play the game in strategic view due to my computer just barely meeting the minimum (seriously my exact video card is even listed as the minimum). I'm worried that "minimum" just means "able to run in strategic view". Also, I agree with you on the unit icons as that's my only issue with it.

My only issue with it is that I wish it worked more like the icon/zoomed out view of galciv2, in this way. In GalCiv2 you can zoom out, and zoom out, and eventually the view shifts to icons, kinda like 5's strat view, then you can zoom back in at the mouse cursor. It's handy for big picture view/planning and quick and easy since you're zooming in/out a lot anyways. F10 just isn't a very convenient key and clicking to toggle the view is worse. Very minor issue but considering shafer has played galciv2 and they're using a similar notification system, I'm kinda surprised.

I may change my opinion when I see it in practice, but I'm not a fan. I'll play most of the game in normal mode with the grid turned on. That should be enough to make it clear where each tile ends and begins, so I don't see the point of the strategic view. The grid method was also how I played IV and even II, because even on those less organic (everyone drink!) maps I always had a hard time being able to tell exactly where my units could move and where one tile ended and another began. But yeah, since the grid clears that all up I'm not sure why I'd want to use the strategic view.

That would be so awesome its not even funny. Galciv 2's way of handling zoom and normal -> strategic view transition is the best in the industry.

Edit: I was thinking about sins of a solar empire....

I think the strategic view will be awesome if it realy allow some player to play without lag with bad computer. (one of my friend wich is barely on the minimum is hoping for that.).

This manual is good. But I'm now on page 23 where archers are having a ranged attack over the mountains :p:.

I think the view will be food to toggle resources and units, to get a big picture of where everything stands. I won't be playing my games with it on all the time or anything, but it serves it's purpose, and does look nice.

I agree :goodjob:

The strategic view reminds me from the early games in the '90 i played

Yeah :goodjob:

I comlpetely disagree. IMO those symbols are big part of the greatness of this strategic view.

I can't belive how many buildings is present in civ 5. If you build barracks, fort, military academy, autocracy, and if you're Persia in golden age + 10 % strenght. Or culture, so many culture buildings. Civ 5 has really taken city specialization to a whole new level! I can't beive it!!!:eek:

As long as Zoom-To-Cursor works in Strategic view, I'll use it a lot probably. Only thing that worries me is how difficult it'll probably be to distinguish all the unit icons and improvement icons.

It might be a bit tricky at first but it shouldn't be too bad. I'd think there would be a mouse-over indicator or at least a way to click and find out.

Love it.
I'm seriously considering playing in strategic view only -- especially when in laptop mode.

@Alsark,

True but mouse-overs are slow and don't really help distinguishability (a word?, lol). Once one is resorting to mouse-overs, the problem is already there. I'm willing to give it a go before I decide whether it's for me or not. :)

The strategic view looks good to me. At this point in time I reckon I'll spend most of my time playing in it (he says without having the game yet...).

Maybe this strategic view can be a proof of concept for Civ5 on the DS/iPhone so you can play turns on the go and then sync it up to the PC.
