Who here takes the time to name their units?

I was just wondering if many people use this feature or not. When I'm really into a game, I do. When I'm just going through the motions, I don't. I tend to have more fun when I actually take the time to name everything.

For example: I start with a warrior, and my first city is near some cows and a stone quarry (on a hill, let's say). I might name the city "Stone-Hill" in the language of the Civ I'm playing, and give my warrior a name like "Bull". As he moves around finding goody huts and getting gold, techs, smacking around animals, or getting promotions "Bull" will then become "Bull the Plunderer", "Bull the Wise (or Learned)", "Bull the Fierce", or "Bull the Healer" accordingly.

I don't know. It kind of makes the game more fun for me. That way, when I send him to sack a city years hence, and he dies, I feel a real sense of loss.

"NOOOOO!!! Not BULL!!! Why if it weren't for Bull the Wise, we'd still be researching Sailing!!! It was indeed Bull the Wise who safely escorted Swift Eagle (a Scout) back within our borders when he was near certain death after the Bear attack of 3240 BC!!Let us weep, Citizens, at the tragic folly of war!!!"

Anybody else?? ;)

I definitely like role-playing with Civ, like playing civs in real historical fashion, or stuff like that. I didn't know you could name units, though. How's that done?

Click on their name in the lower left corner of the screen. For example click on "Warrior" and it will open up a dialog box for you to rename the unit. Afterwards, it will appear with whatever name you've given it followed by it's unit type, i.e. "Maximus the Brute (Warrior)".

Oh,I also lost my cousin in the great bear attack of 3240BC.. :D

But yeah naming is fun, when I'm in a middle of a busy industrialized war of massed armies marching into the meatgrinder I don't really give names, but in quieter times and the early eras I sometimes like to do it, I usually name them after they get promotions, so a musketman with embarkation bonus becomes "1st Marine" and anti cavalry unit is named "1st Horse-kicker" etc
Then when such unit makes more great deeds I give it a more colorful name.

I didn't know you could name unit's before this thread either. Now I'm gonna run around naming my units :D

Sometimes I'm such a noob :D

On several of the scenarios, and often in regular games, I'll do a quick cheat and name my ships after historical examples - like USS Enterprise, or HMS Victory. Also, the lead unit in a SOD might be named something like Legeo Felix, or Army Group B.

I like to name my first warrior Chuck Norris in the hopes he'll survive. It never works, so I'll save it for Great General units.

I used to name strong units like I once named an archer who held off an entire barbarian infestation (4 other archers) or a unit that reached like 25 or 30 experiance without a general.

but then i stopped playing civ for a year or so and have now forgotten how to name them.

I like to do so, especially with boats, or late units. It's much more fun to see "Your Terreur (destroyer) sank Ragnar's Transport" ! Or "Your "Escadrille des Cigognes" shot Shaka's fighter down" !

When I can can I also rename great persons, just not to have, say, Arminius as a great roman general or Horatio Nelson a great french general...

Once I get to gunpowder I name my units according to which promotions have been carried through on upgrade e.g. Infantry are City Raider or Drill. If I've got a unit I'm going to sacrifice then I might name it just to get the pop-up:

"Your Dick Cheney has died trying to attack an Arabian Camel Archer." :mischief:

Adding my reply from another thread a way back.. this is the 3rd I've seen on the topic ^^

Cities: I sometimes rename captured enemy cities to fit in with the "flavor" or language of my own empire, but still bearing resemblance to their original names. For instance, when I play Korea, Japan or China I find it fun to mentally transcribe the captured city's name into my empire's language and then romanizing it back to alphabetic. For instance, Paris would become Ba Li, P'ari or Parisu.

As for units, I love renaming highly (or somewhat) promoted ones :)

Woodsman 2 or 3: "Ranger"
Guerrilla 2 or 3: "Mountaineer"
CR3 and Barrage 1: "Citysmasher" - I may end up doing this for a lot of cannons!

Also Medic when appropriate. A really nifty one I had was a Gunship with major Medic upgrades. It was named "Medevac" haha!

And before the Marines era I might call my Rifleman a "Marine" if it has that promotion. Or name a modern advanced infantry unit "Commando" or "Delta", if it's got the Commando promotion (use enemy roads).
Lastly. Cavalry units with both Flanking 2 and Mobility will be known as "Fast Cav" or something ^^

I always rename cities.

usually i will name it according to some feature around it or where it is in the empire.

like a city in the west may be 'West End" or 'California" a peninsula on the east side of the continent may be "east point"

islands get names like 'Jamaica" or "easter island"

"purple River" "Golden Cow" "spice mountain' are other names.

I find if i dont name a city i cant remember where it is. but when it says "A mine near Two Rivers has been destroyed by enemy activity" i know exactly where it is.

I might have to try this too. Sounds fun.

Sometimes I do. It's generally just with melee and gunpowder units, though.
For the melee units, I name them "<#> <City built in> Legion" and for gunpowder units "<#> <Where they are operating> Division"

So, a warrior built in Rome would be called 1st Roman Legion and a redcoat fighting near a colony of England would be called 1st Colonial Division.

I like to rename my Great Generals, so I don't have, say Geronimo leading the French. I like to keep 'em culture-specific.

I only name my first few units (legendary units ) and then any unit with more than 3 promos are named. If they get more than 6 they get the word Commander in front and an extra adjective behind. Commander Blazing Blades with Cr3 C5 Commando and amphibious Macemen!
