absolutely never played mp. to stick around in a occ mp game, one would have to build a lot o defensive units+keep rebuilding them. takes too much time and resources. against ai on deity you can defend your city with caravans, because no one bothers you, and barbarians cant destroy any of your units if they are in your only city. a diplomat on a city with no city walls could destroy a (for arguments sake) barbarian nuke or howitzer or bomber or whatever, because barbarians are not alowd to destroy it.
