So they lose, once in a while they make a movie where the evil guy is ******** and STILL wins, but thats just because they want to stand apart from the crowd.(The people who made the movie)
So the hero can be molded to fit a cultural identity instead of being perfect. The villain is only allowed to exploit a certain set of the hero's traits, and the villain's failure will reinforce the cultural identity.
The Joker was actually interesting because he was going to continue pushing and pushing and pushing and sowing chaos until he was taken down. He seemed to be aware of that too.
When somebody comes up with an idea you don't understand, your usual reaction will be that the idea is idiotic. But it's also possible the idea is correct and that you're just too dumb to get it. There's no way to tell which. So, to most of us, a genuine genius will in fact appear to be a complete idiot. Until his Doomsday Missile actually works.......
Too often, we tend to judge genius and insanity from our own personal frame of reference. We need to remember that the world is bigger than we are and doesn't care if we understand it.
Oh, and don't forget, in Spider-Man, the evil geniuses (Green Goblin and Doc Ock) have split personalities and are part good. They later end up killing themselves.
