Ive already demanded a couple things from wang kon and he accepted.

But now hes crossed the line! Hes refused to give me all his gold when i threatened him. So i got my ships full of troops to prepare to take his last city but when i tried to declare war it wouldnt let me!??

This is totally unfair that we cant declare war on our vassels if they refuse to give tribute. Doesnt make much sense to me gameplay wise or realistically.

Use "Search this Forum", These are the keywords; Vassal, Capitulation.

Why? Your vassal is AI. In case play with Human, 100% you can do that. To refuse is to declare war on Master. It works automatically.

Agreed. I swear it's a bug or something, because it totally contradict's the information about the vassal system.

From the warlords infomation center.

"The master can demand any resource from a vassal, even those that the vassal is using. The vassal has the right to refuse the demand but if they do they two states are immediately at war."

No idea what Colossian is on about.

Money is not a resource, resources are things like wheat, iron, and silver. Vassalization means they do some things for you and some things for them, not that they'll always give up everything to you for the rest of the game.

It's the same for resources though. I've had them refuse me resources.. and nothing happened. No instant decleration of war, no option to declare war. They just stuck their fingers up and there was nothing I could do about it.

Can you pillage his land? Do it until you get the amount of gold you want :)

I was confused until yesterday. I finally figured how the system works. Basically, at each turn you get to demand 1 resource which cannot be refused. In such a case the option will be "We demand this for your tribute or this means WAR!". If he refuses, it's automatic war (although I've never seen them refuse).

You cannot ask for gold or gold/turn, only resources. In the same fashion, asking for 2 tributes (either forced or capitulated) will be a 100% refusal and will still carry the reputation hit.

When I have no resource to demand, I will typically ask for gold or gold/turn. It doesn't work automatically, but most of the time it does. You can ALT-Click the vassal in the point list (right bottom) to quickly demand vassal tribute. BE SURE YOU DON'T ALT or SHIFT-CLICK a non-vassal, as it will immediatly trigger war WITHOUT confirmation.

I still think the master should be able to terminate vassalship at any time, or perhaps after 10 rounds like other deals.

Another thing to know about vassals is that you need to put troops in their cities (esp. border ones) in order to beef them up. If you go to war, I have noticed the AI will go for soft targets (vassals are usually soft). If they take too much out of your vassals, they can break off vassalship and will typically capitulate to the big enemy you are fighting. If anything, you need to protect your vassals better than yourself because loosing a vassal city hurts much more than loosing one of your cities.

On the bright side, I just managed a conquest victory with only 28% of the land mass by vassaling ALL the AI's I hadn't anilihated :)

Vassalage really changes the game. You need to think in terms of the Mogonlian, Roman, German, English, French empires... You don't actually replace the countries with your poeple, you just take over the commands and move on to the next target. Makes wars much quicker :)

Oh and also, to get an AI to capitulate, bombard, pillage, etc. You don't even need to have any significant gains. A city or two, the strain of 10+ rounds of war and strategic pillaing and bombardments will have the AI beg for it in no time. Be sure you grab it ASAP, otherwise the other AI's will jump on it.

I haven't try it. But if you got Vassal state via capitulation, it should work.

Too bad, afterthat I offer my vassal state a crossing agreement. Mean they can cross also to my land, while vassal state via capitulation only let you cross their land, but not vice versa (according to warlords' manual).

Arto.

My first warlords game. It's 1920, I'm English, and I capitulated Indians thousands of years ago. usually, the force-to-give-me-resources feature works fine. But now they have oil (I gave them 3 technologies so they could build well) adn are refusing to give it to me. WTH?!

To experiment, I canceled their giving me deer that I forced them to give hundreds of years ago, and after canceling it it still won't let me force them to give the deer or the oil to me. Indians still my vassal, but they're getting to refuse. Any ideas?

I encountered something similar  and stopped taking vassals afterwards.

In an older thread someone speculated that this situation happens if you make more than one demand in a turn. If so, I would think it shouldn't lead to permanent refusal of tribute. Perhaps it is a bug?
