Why can't they show the map expansion like in Civ 1?

Topic 1: I really enjoyed at the end of Civ1 where, at the end, when you had conquered the world, it showed your expansion over the entire map, and also a running comentary or every major achievement you civilization accomplished in your time as their leader. Is there a mod or add-on that I can get to do that?

Topic 2: Is it just me or does everyone except me build and use nearly every type of unit there is? When I play Civvy, I go through and use only a select few units. I start with Elephants, then Crusaders, Dragoons, Cavalry and then onto Armor (Tanks) and with sea units I only use Transports and Battleships. Why bother with inferior units when these (when relevant for the time frame used - ie, get rid of any old units as soon as new ones can be built) usually carry quite a good attack, defence and movement rating? Yeah, some others may in particular have a good defence, or a good attack... By why start a war with units that have good attack when as soon as you hold them in the city they will be attacked and slaughtered? I've been playing Civ1 and now 2 for over 7 years and taught myself everyting I know! That's the way I always use my units and it is quite effective...
I also recently started using a new method of starting in Civvy, and that is using the first 15 cities I build to build two settlers straight away... The first one, use it to go and build another city in a decent spot immeadiately and then use the second to improve the squares around the original city... The game which I'm using at the moment where I've done this, I have 65 cities, over 100Mil population, every city fully worked and all cities with every improvement build in the first 50 or so of them! (Mind you it's only 1700AD - May not be good for some of you die-hard Civ fanatics..) but I don't get to play as much anymore and I'm usually one of these players that use about 3/4 cities and build them up huge with all the wonders, with one (Usually the capital) with all the science wonders and improvements. I go from there to take over the world... But because I usually spend a lot of time developing them to their utmost it's usually about 1900's by the time I start attacking (Mind you, I still whup ass!) Anyway, that's my little peice, look forward to hearing from yaz!

Welcome!
I don't know the answer to your first question, but I do remember it from Civ and it was excellent. Mostly for gloating purposes

As to your second question, I assume that you mean for conquering other civs. I can't imagine that you just sit round in your city waiting to discover polytheism before you unleash elephants on the world to explore. Just using elephants seems a foolish strategy if you aren't prepared to back them up with phalanxes, archers or legions for defense. My favourite early units are a mix of legions, who can defend and attack as well as an elephant and a phalanx, and catapults or knights, crusaders, etc. The catapult/legion combo solves the problem of mounted units moving too far ahead of their defenders. When you've got a dip that you have to skip turn after using one of his moves every time so that he is not attacked and can stay under the legionary is darned annoying. I also like marines for all purposes - great fortified and can take enemy cities with impunity after your battleships have ground all resistance into the dust without reducing the population.
Oh, and don't boast about having a little piece.

It's a good point to use good defnce to back you up... But when your city has only one move units in it, and you can see a unit two squares away that is sure to attack you... and WILL get a free shot at you because you can't get to them in time to take them out. I hate having the non maneouvreability (Don't ask me if that is spelt right...) of havuing 1 peice units... Albeit, once my Civ is settled down and I'm not in a constant state of war, then, yes, I do use defensive units in my cities... But I mainly use tanks at the end... They have 5 defence... That's only one less the the best... With also 10 att... I think that makes them a pretty good allrounder that you don't really need to have intermediaries... That just annoys me... But hey! I"m not saying that other ways don't work... Just that this is the way I do it, and it works well for me...
I've also noticed that on all, yes all the top games (Downloadable ones) The land is alway underdeveloped... There was one that had a pop. of over 350Mil (I've never been THAT high!) and about 200+ cities... but the capital had only 5 production?!?! The city was mainly surrounded by grassland and water - without the standard grassland modifies to plains (which give the same ammount of food and also give you one shield... and no offshore platform been built... I can understand building heaps of cities and killing everyone quickly to achieve a high score, but whats the point of having underdeveloped cities and land? The object is "To Build a Civilization That Will Stand The Test Of Time!!!"... I'll have to say though, creating the kind of scores that they have in the hall of fame is pretty impressive... I have to say, I've never gone all that well under emporer or Diety... but the rest of the defficulty levels aeren't that hardcore... Anyway, I'm off to do some work... might think of some more boring stuff to annoy your guys with later on tonight.

enven on diety i build cities like that to get a high score but my graph is very different that anyother power graph i have seen.

Of curiosity H, what do you mean "different"? How is your Power Graph different that everyon else's? Maybe you can post it for us to gawk at

LOL, build the units you need for a specific role. Howitzers shoot thru city walls, paratroops jump 10 squares, destroyers & choppers locate subs, carries... well, the carry and ferry your planes across an ocean, spies are almost unstoppable.

So build what you need to the tasks you need to accomplish in a given situation

. In Civ II, against the AI, there are probably a dozen different strategies that can be used successfully at any given moment..

Blah... What can I say... I'm one of these perfectionist types... I hate not being able to quickly see my unit strength as compared to other civ's..
I do sometimes use other units but really only the same ones... And whatever the comment that someone made about waiting for polytheism..?! What was that about? I build two settlers before anything else with my first city and by that time I have polytheism, then start building elephants to explore and attack with...
And I may lack finesse with attacking other civ's with the same units - But C'mon! When has brute force and sheer ammount of number not won a war! Hehe!
Well, Have fun people and I'll write again tomorra!!!
