I get screwed by the computer in wars all the time! There has been instances where a spearman will take out one of my tanks! Why does this happen?

It depends on the defensive bonuses the defenders get and a little luck from the random number generator.

Make sure you don't attack from across a river and things like that. It is also worth while to bombard a city down in population and HP of the defenders before attacking.

My friend *chuckles*, you have suffered at the hands of the Evil Random Number Generator, a foul demon who lives inside your Civ 3 disc to do nothing else but cause you pain. I should know, I've met him. What's that? *listens to disc* He also says that your mother is of the bovine persuasion.

Well, that, and possibly because that spearman is in a heavily garrisoned city. This will give him a big defense bonus. However, cities always give the defender a bonus.

Yup..... There is a way to prepare for this though... BUILD MORE UNITS. I normally try to have 3 groups of 10 (30 units total) to attack. This way when you lose a guy vs a spearmen you still have 9 to take it down with!

It's entirely true! If you have Civ3 PTW, you can select whether or not the seed is rechosen every losd. Then, if you save before and lose, you can load and win!

Actually, you don't need PTW for this. You just need to be patched up to the latest version. Not sure which version it came in, but you'll have it if you update your copy of Civ 3 to 1.29f.

Quite true. An elite spearman, fortified in a metropolis (although you don't see many spearmen in metropolises) being attacked across a river by a veteran tank will win nearly 15% of the time.

Change that to a veteran spear in a city with the same conditions, and he'll only win 6% (1 out of 20). On a grassland not across a river, he'll only win 2.6% of the time.

That is if he doesn't get killed the first 15% time :)
