Why do I have contact with every Civ on the map?

What happened?

I took the random GEM map (v27, non-SVN), put the Civs in their locations, and fixed some of the things that bugged me about the map. I then saved it as a scenario and played as Nimi. Unlike a normal game, I did not get to go first- about 40 of the Civs went first and settled their cities while I waited. Each time one settled its city, I gained contact with it. I then went on to the next turn and gained contact with the remaining 10 Civs as they settled. I don't see how this could be anything but a bug, but I thought it might warrant its own thread because of how interesting and gamebreaking it is. Nothing even remotely similar has ever popped up in any game I've played.

Here is the save: View attachment Nimi BC-50000.CivBeyondSwordSave

I would like to point out that there really should be a scrolldown option for the diplomacy bar (I've seen it in another mod). Also, the Jivaroan capital is Mayapan (which is not Jivaroan), and the rest of its cities have the Mongolian names. What?

This is a GEM map problem, and should be asked in that thread, C2C puts in GEM maps but the map makers take care of it thx.

How do you know? Has this happened before?

Once you mention the "word" GEM its out of out hands, and belongs to them to fix. Thats why they have their OWN thread.

I think that is under the Diplomacy section of WB, iirc.

You'll want to open it up in an xml editor, delete the lines below each team regarding who they've made contact with, and under each civilization header, change the variable for IsMinorNation from 1 to 0. As long as the option is still selected, this won't actually remove minor nation status. You'll have to relaunch civ to get it to recognize the changes, since otherwise it keeps a lot of info cached and it won't change the contact status.

It's not a GEM-only problem. It happens sometimes when you save a game as a scenario. As said, you'll have to open the scenario file (.CivBeyondSwordWBSave), usually in the C:\Users\YourName\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Saves\WorldBuilder folder, using an XML editor like Notepad++. Yeah it's not an XML file, but Worldbuilder saves are in the right format to be edited in this way.

Incidentally, this is one of the amateur ways to permanently edit a map without turning it into a scenario, maps such as GEM. Start a game using the map, best to use the bare minimum number of civs and no barbarians, go into worldbuilder once it starts, make the terrain changes you want, save as scenario. Then manually edit out all the civilization, gameoption, and unit data. Use the original map file as a template for what to edit out and what to keep in. You'll end up with a map that starts off exactly the same as the original GEM, where you can choose any game option or any civ, though the terrain changes you made will remain. You can even put in fun things like mysterious roads and city ruins.
