Why do I only have three happy faces with five luxuries?

Hello.

I have access to five different lux resources. So I would expect all connected cities to have five happy faces. But they don't. Even my capital city only has three. Why? I have no war going (so no war weariness) and I didn't whip anyone.
When I click the sad faces, I get the usual "too crowded" stuff.
I really wish I had the possibility to see a complete breakdown of citizen moods and what affects them, as in Civ2 (pressing "h" in your city display). That WAS informative.
Any help? I'm playing Conquests with the latest patch, emperor level.

when you say you have 5 luxuries, do you mean you have 5 different luxuries? or do you have 2 incense, 1 gems, and 2 wines?

Also, what faces are you counting, the people's ?

On the left of your city screen, there is a luxury research box that shows the luxuries available in the city in a vertical row.
Next to those luxuries are shown the happy faces they provide. Without market places, that would be a vertical row of 5 happiness faces. With market places, that would be 5 rows of respectivele 1,1,2,2,3 happy faces. For a total of 9 happy faces.

If you only have 3 happy faces in there, then surely there are also only 3 luxuries.

If you were looking at your people, then notice:
There are content faces and happy faces. You first need to make a guy content before making him happy. If there are not enough content faces available (those you get from temple, the orange ones - not yellow) to make happy citizens with your happy faces, part of your happy faces will be used to make the citizens content first. So if you only have 1 content citizen and 5 happiny faces, 2 of the happy faces will be used to make 2 more citizen content, and the remaining 3 will be used to make the now 3 content citizens happy.

Times like this a screenie would be very useful. Can you post one of those, or a save? Both, perhaps?

You have a penalty with Emperor level, too. Something like only 2 content citizens.

Why isn't this in the reference?

I do have 5 different luxuries: wine, silk, furs, dyes and incense.
And I only have three happy (smiling) faces.
How do you make a screenshot?

That means that you have only three citizens who would be content without any luxuries. The other two luxuries, rather than making content citizens happy, are making unhappy citizens content.

You must be right.

But can anyone tell me how to make and upload a screenshot?

It tells how to upload but doesn't explain how to take a screenshot. I tried print screen but nothing happens.

hit printscreen, go to photoshop hit new and hit paste

All right, I have the screenshot and I have uploaded it. How do I insert it here now?

Well, I can always try the attachment method. Here we go.
Note: It's the French version of the game.
The text "il y a vraiment trop de monde" means "it's really too crowded here", or whatever is the original English text.

and put your file name right after the '/' and before the '[/img]'.

]Okay, you got it. That works too.

Is that a marketplace you're building? Sorry, don't read french.

Building the marketplace will give a boost to the luxs, and will give you four more happy faces (2 each for 3 & 4 luxs, and 3 for the fifth) and will go a long way to making your people happy.

As I recall, each happy face makes one unhappy person content. So it takes two happy faces to make one unhappy person happy.

Yes, that's a MP.
Thanks for all your help. I think I get it. I thought luxuries could make citizens happy wether they already were content or not.

Morchuflex, I think I know.

Your government is Republic, isn't it? Representative governments like Republic and Democracy suffer war weariness, meaning that when your Civ is at war, your people's happiness falls gradually as time passes.

Thanks, Myzenium, but I'm at peace with everyone.

Actually, I have it worked out.

This is Carthage without luxuries (or Lux tax): (H=happy, C=content, U=unhappy)

CCUUUU

One lux:

HCUUUU

Two lux:

HHUUUU

Three lux:

HHCUUU

Four lux:

HHHUUU

Five lux:

HHHCUU

Luxuries make content citizens happy first, but all they do is bring the citizen mood up one level (unhappy to content, content to happy). Thus, if there are no content citizens to make happy, the lux makes an unhappy citizen content instead.
