Why do people confuse "British" with "English"?

I call myself British. I'm half Scots anyway, and English has too many associations with hooligan and yob culture for my tastes. The yobs tend to be concentrated in the South of England though, so I'm glad to be Northern.

My wife is half Scottish and half English and also refers to herself as British, though she favours England a bit as that's where she was born.

That's strange. The impression I get is that the yobs are concentrated in the North (of England). If neither of us can find many yobs where we are, where have they all gone?

They're everywhere, run for your lives!:run:

The Celtic blood gives Britain a good name. The English are a bunch of *censored* (sorry, I'm Irish, Scotish, AND Welsh) ;)
