Why do the Russians keep on attacking me?

Why?

After the 3rd time they attacked me, I fought them until they had just two cities left, and spared them.


Then a few turns later, with the Carthagians crossing the sea to get me, they attacked me again, and destroyed a city.

Why I've not been the agressor at all, or doube crossed anyone.

maybe you're playing on a higher agression level. it's on the game startup screen when you pick the civs and difficulty level. it's easy to misclick on very agressive and not notice it.

What I find interesting is picking the least aggressive option for the AI, and **still** getting attacked. I usually get attacked when the AI tries to get me to accept a trade that is disadvantageous to me, or the AI tries to bully me into giving something up, which I don't do. Then before I know it, here come the troops.

I like aggressive AI. It leads to the AI attacking each other more meaning that when I eventually get around to fighting the other major world power I am faced with a worthy opponent.

Even when you make peace they are usually still angry with you. That will not change for many, many turns.

IMHO when you had them down to only two cites left you should have just killed them outright. End of problem

Unless you're running out of units, there's no reason not to capture those last two cities. A country which you've just defeated in a war, and quite likely got a "humiliating" peace treaty from, will be furious at you for many, many turns.

In my most recent game the Japanese were on another continent wedged between the Iroquois and the Aztecs who pretty much demolished them, but since they were the only people who hadn't betrayed me (or who I hadn't betrayed ) I gave them a city in the middle of my continent which I had completely dominated by this point. After they got booted off the other continent and I built the Manhattan Project the world somehow got thrown into nuclear war and by the time I launched my fifth or sixth nuke on the Iroquois the Japanese declared war on me. Silly fools, it seems they forgot they were a single city with a single defender owning 9 tiles surrounded by my bustling Modern Armor-equipped empire. The AI often makes excruciatingly dumb diplomatic decisions.

And this was after I had gifted them a half dozen techs and a couple thousand gold to draw out the war they were fighting as long as I could.

The ai gets jealous if you are too powerful, and will declare war on you out of the mistaken belief that it will somehow bring you back down a peg. In reality it just gives you an excuse to paste them, but that just shows the AI isn't too smart. You can never do anything dishonest to anyone, and they'll still get furious with you if you are winning.
