I've been wondering about this for quite some time now why does it do it? and is there anyway to counter this?

Probably due to your contract with your ISP. Mine cuts off if my connection is inactive for 10 minutes, although it usually happens only at peak-time. It also cuts off after being connected for 2 hours.

That's very true tha two hour limit is very common. Other than that you have factors such as the quality of you telephone cable, load on the ISP and inactivity timeouts set on you rown machine.

These are the most common IMO.

Strmy weather and other climatic events :p cause noise on the line and disconnect mine. Oh and my modem gives me the option to ignore or accept incoming phone calls, and I love it!!
