Beards haven't really been a status symbol nor mark of rulers since the Edwardian period. This is because every man in the belligerent nations had to shave their beard during the Great War to provide long underwear for the national dirigible crews.

Nice to have you back Simon and to see you haven't lost your persona
Beards are itchy, ugly, get food trapped in them, put girls off kissing (and more ) and can make you look silly.
There are obvious exceptions to this, but on the whole, far too many men look either like jolly Jesus, a geologist/anthropologist/ornathologist type-thing or worse a child molester
Clean shaven, with a shaved head is how so many alpha males in their 50s are doing things in Britain and combined with a good jacket and the sort of car you can buy when you are in your 50s, they look darn good as compared to 50-year old alpha males of yesteryear.

I'd think the "Michael Jackson look" is most likely to get you pegged as a child molester lately, and that is as far away from bearded as you can get without actually looking like a child.

Come off it...I don't think people can possibily make a generalisation about people with Michael Jackson entering the equation. Beard + Mac = child molester - sorted.
Pertaining to facial hair in general, and I wouldn't want to start a new thread on this question so I will ask it here.
Why don't American Indian males ever have beards. Can they just not grow them or something?
I know many Eastern Asians can't grow a lot of facial hair, so with the Native Americans being closely related, it stands to reason that maybe the can barely grow anything at all.
In a world where election results are dependent on television appearances, breads tend to get low ratings mostly among female voters. What's that saying? "Fortunately, our handsomest politicians found a quick solution to all our problems."
I have a beard and have had it for several years. As I am old and wrinkled but do not yet have grey hair it makes me look at least 10 years younger than I really am. I know because every once in a while I shave it off and don't like the way I look. I now have a 9 month old son and I think he would be confused if I shaved.

Beards are less common simply due to fashion. Women prefer smooth-shaven men, so men shave their faces. Therefore, fewer leaders will have beards. Just another example how women control men!
I know that, but the Asians are significantly less hairy than most other people. I heard that in China, facial hair, specifically the "fu manchu"-type, was seen as a mark of a distinguished person since it took so damn long to grow.
