How about a mod that significantly improves turn times? Not good enough? Rather wait?

Haha, this is the mod that finally got me to start modding. There is about 0% chance I'm going back to unmodded gameplay.

Also, props to the Dethklok avatar.

I don't like mods

Every time I try to mod a game I quickly get sucked into just...one...more...mod... thing. I'm never satisfied with what the game looks like and want to download and try out more stuff. After installing several dozens of mods I don't even remember what half of them was supposed to do so I end up annoyed and just throw them all out and return to the standard game.

That is completely true and is exactly why it makes ZERO sense that we don't earn achievements if we play with mods. I mean, why not? It's not like we take anything away from anybody.

Anyway, I play with mods, so I guess I'm disqualified from posting in this thread. :p

Achievements are the only reason I don't mod. They give me a goal to reach each game. In Steam, after each achievement, it shows the % of people that have accomplished them. If they allowed achievements with mods, those stats would be completely worthless.

Paradox makes some great games, but their achievements suck badly compared to Civs. That is the reason I have 1000 hours in Civ5 and maybe 200 in their games.

I don't care for achievements or bugs, but I just can't stay interested when I know that I can keep changing the rules of the game by adding more mods. I need some kind of authority figure (the devs) to tell me "hey, these are the rules, can you beat it?", or else it is just not interesting. I have already tried playing with mods.

cough

Hate to rain on your parade, but they're already completely worthless when you can load up someone else's game and get achievements.

But hey, whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy, right?

eww. And yes you did.

I do feel warm and fuzzy when I get an achievement, so what? I take back my comment on the mods + achievements though. If people are just going to do that why not? If they did allow it, I'd give some a shot. I bet there are others that would too.

You can feel warm and fuzzy, I'm just saying it defeats your argument of "Mods cheapen achievements." No, they don't when you can just download achievements. Achievements mean pretty much nothing in this type of game with saves.

I'm not putting down mods. I'm saying getting achievements, whether they mean anything or not to you, is more important to me than using a mod and not getting them. That's why I don't use them, which was what the title of the thread asked.

Civ 5 probably sold around a million copies. A couple hundred people cheating and using someone's saves doesn't change the % by more than 1%. Playing for achievements might make me competitive, but you telling me how to enjoy my video games means you have a control problem.

Project much?

Please show me where I told you how to enjoy your video game. I'm just defeating your logic, that's all.

Besides, a couple hundred people modding wouldn't change the achievement % by more than 1% right?

Yes, this is exactly why I have long advocated for just removing the mod restriction on achievements. It's not like achievements give you any benefits unlike some games, where earning achievements unlock new features, so who cares if some people cheat? I play with a range of mods, most of them UI mods that I would never play without, but which is in no way cheating, and I would never consider playing without them, but I do miss the opporunity to earn achievements, simply because they are often a good encouragement to play in a different way than I normally will do - with another civ, other policy trees, other victory conditions or whatever. I know I still have the freedom to do that, but sometimes it's fun just to have that little extra push.

You probably know this, but when only using mods that don't affect save games (and at least some UI mods don't), it is always possible to save the game before finishing/earning an achievement, load the save without enabling any mods and then earning the high score entry/achievement.

I didn't, but the mods I use are not limited to UI mods, so it wouldn't work either way. But it's a good tip to remember.

Is there one? I'd actually appreciate that, so please do share the name of it.

In reply to the main thread, I have tried mods, but was overall disappointed. In spite of what so many people on the forums say, the mods are neither as well designed as the main game, nor as well tested. And, even when I like something in a mod, often it comes with additional stuff that I don't want.

Maybe I was unlucky, but for me even the two most useful and least debatable mods (InfoAddict and Communitas) added more UI bugs than they were worth. The UI changes they made were definite improvements, but I kept running into bad UI bugs and gave up.

I like the achievements, but I don’t chase them. I enjoy being pleasantly surprised when they occasionally pop-up. So what you suggest would not work for me, and is a significant factor in my reluctance to try mods.
