I think it's fair to say that young people are far more likely to be left-wing (i.e. socialist/communist) than older people. The evidence is for all to see on these boards.
I am also 17. I am not at all left-wing, I am extremely religious and very interested in politics as far as they can furthur my beliefs. I believe that the vast majority of the modern youth has been totally indoctrinated by the modern schooling system, and there parents (who where also indoctrinated by the public school system)
I generaly find the most refreshing views in those people who grew up before the 60s. Those people far outclass 99% of the current people IMO.
Most people my age in my area are die-hard liberals. Also, the conservatives here are alot more open minded (well at least the younger ones). There aren't too many liberals here (of any age), who think that it is okay to have a different opinion than them (talking South New Jersey here).
Im almost 30 and yeah, i think i am a liberal. Still full of ideas. But nonetheless, i dont think being liberal means not pragmatic. Many Successful Scientist and Entreprenuer are idealist and liberal. Look at all those film makers !!Many think to be successful, especially at older age. Being Pragmatic and hence equal Conservative ? The old fashion way, it always work, they said. If the thing not broke, dont fix it. I dont agree.
Innovation is almost as important as a sane viable project. There are always alternative than Employer ---> Rules---> employee type of buisness.
People can be make to change, But first we just need to prove to them, there are better alternative and they will follow.
Liberals are pioneers i say, coz they dare to try new things, experiments. Many will fail, hence look down by the conservative. But i dare those who laugh at those who try to make a different. Coz i will not.
Those sticking to the old way will soon found themselves obsolete. its the way. Just like all those great houses of old and those old mighty empires. Conservation lead to their decline.
Many people, when asked, don't admit they're left-wing. They claim they're "neither". Still, when I hear their opinions on things it turns out they've swallowed the whole left-wing world view in one piece. That makes them quite left-wing in my eyes.
Like Raimus75 I'm also almost 30 and consider myself left wing (liberal in american language). I've worked for nearly a decade, had responsibility for looking after myself, paying my bills, finding where to live etc. but it hasn't stopped me thinking the state should help those who aren't as succesful at doing this.
I've paid many thousands of pounds of taxes on what I've earned, but frankly, the amount should be even higher, I don't see why the government should have to run itself on the cheap just because people in my position get too selfish or greedy.
I just find right wing ideologies too mean spirited, and basically a justification for unreasonable selfishness. I thought that when I was 15, when I was 20, when I was 25, and I'm sure I'll think it next year when I'm 30.
Ten years ago, my late uncle made a very inportant statement to me which I will never forget. He pointed out to me that, when watching the news about the Balkan War on BBC, the reporter tends to be pro-Serbia. When you watch the news on a German channel though, they tend to be more pro-Kroatian.
This observation made me realize that most people who declare something (anything) on television either lie, or are at least biased. That explains why I don't go run after people like Michael Moore.
I suspect though that most young people are (more so than others) prone to believe in simple, emotial statement whether it be "we can't let the homeless die" or "throw the turkish out". Leftish parties tend to advocate the more simple ideas (although they got no monopoly!) so that's why they are more leftish than the rest.
because younger people are less enroled in various crappy conservative lobbies. I believe that the more you grow the less you are free to follow your way. Idealism doesn't inevitably mean unconsciousness.
I'm 16, and I consider myself left-wing. Not extreme or anything, but a socialist liberal. Most people in my school are conservative. They make fun of gays, isolate people etc.
I am a socialist as far as I consider gloabalisation, monopolies, imnequality and emploitation wrong. I am not as far as I want to take away people's earned money.
Why am I socialist? A combination of reasons:
-Family, traditionally left-wing
-History, boy did Thatcher screw us up
-Common views, the socialists opposed Iraq
Excuse me? I am 20 years old. I am not in full time education. In fact, I am in full time work - lo, I am still a left wing liberal. Once again, you display your talent for sheer, crass, unadulterated ignorance.
Let's not forget that most teens aren't interested in politics at all, and the minority that are tend to be those that are motivated to change the status quo. The left commonly represents the progressive views on social issues, so teens tend to favour them. Young people are overwhelmingly more likely to be concerned with social issues than with economic issues.
Social realities evolve over time. Todays conservatives would (hopefully) have been campaigning for civil rights only a few decades ago. They didn't "become more conservative", rather the scale by which they are measured became more liberal.
So kids and university nerdy interlecturals are left-wing.
Because these people have the free time to think and experience how bad the world is. Other people just so busy filling their stomach and don't care any more.
When you are a teenager, you actually think, darn, how come I don't have any friends, this sucks. Later on you won't give a rat about how many friends you have.

That's an excellent point, but economic scales have really gone the other way. For example young people just aren't joining Trade Unions in the way they would have a generation or two ago.

That's maybe because the Left-Wing economic doctrines were vastly disproved in the last 30 years.
For exemple, in 1950 the Socialist School of Economics was perhaps the biggest one, even in the West(not in the US, but definately in Europe and Latin America).
Today the Socialist School is a joke, even the left-wing economist don't want to associate themselves with it.
The most "lefty" Economic School is the Neokeynesian one, and that's not left-wing by most standards. So truly left-wing Economics are dead.
